Jordan’s words left his father stunned. Mason Smith just stared, unable to come up with a response. Of course he didn’t want anything to happen to the Smith family. With his youngest son already behind bars, the last thing they needed was trouble with the Smith Group.
“I’ll fly back soon and take care of this myself,” Jordan said, his tone all business.
“Alright, we’ll go with your plan,” Mason replied. He wasn’t about to argue. Jordan was always the level-headed one, and Mason knew when to listen. He headed straight to the Smith Group offices to call an emergency meeting.
Barbara Jones was livid when she heard the Smith Group wasn’t just refusing to help her family, but was actually cutting ties. As soon as she found out, she stormed into the Smith Group and caused a huge scene, just like Mason had predicted.
Mason pulled her into his office and let her have it. “Are you trying to drag the Smith Group down with you? You don’t agree? Then do you have a better idea? Lucas is in jail, and he’s not getting out any time soon. And let’s be real, this is all because of you. Go home and think about what you’ve done. If you keep causing trouble, you might as well go back to the Jones family for good.”
He didn’t waste another second on her, turning his attention back to the crisis at hand.
But before he could even get things under control, more bad news hit. The Jones family’s businesses were being investigated for bribery and shady deals with government officials. Several operations were forced to shut down, and now the Smith Group’s finances and taxes were under review too.
When Mason heard, he almost blacked out. For a second, the whole room spun. Thank God Jordan had insisted on cutting ties. If only he’d acted faster. The two families had been connected for decades, and it wasn’t something you could untangle overnight.
But Mason was too slow. The Jones family collapsed almost instantly, and the shockwaves hit the Smith Group hard.
Meanwhile, in Cabinda, Aaron came to update Dennis Williams about everything going on with the Smith family.
“These Jones and Smith people really can’t stand up to any scrutiny,” Aaron said, shaking his head. “We barely looked into them, and there’s already so much dirt. They’re lucky they’ve never had real enemies. Otherwise, they’d be finished by now.”
Dennis’s voice was cool. “The Smiths’ rise was always suspicious. None of this is a surprise.”
Back in Harrisburg, Dennis had looked like an outsider to most, but he’d done his homework. He knew the lay of the land, who was who, and where the skeletons were buried. The top families all had secrets. Dennis wasn’t close with them and had no reason to interfere, so he’d stayed out of their business—until they kept pushing his limits and hurt someone he cared about.
