Camila Davis had no idea any of this was happening. Back in Cabinda, her life had settled into a quiet, easy rhythm. She still couldn't remember much, but every day felt lighter. Since her health meant she didn’t have to go back to the research institute, she spent her time at home. When boredom set in, she’d flip through her old medical books, and when that got old, she’d chat with Lillian.
The best surprise was realizing just how talented her daughter was. Lillian could draw, and not just doodles—real paintings that had even won awards. She played instruments too, and Camila never got tired of listening to her violin. Most days, they’d sit together drawing, or she’d simply sit back and let Lillian fill the house with music.
Sarah Brown finally found some free time and came over for a visit. She had only just heard about everything that had happened to Camila. She’d been busy helping Larry Adams with his mother’s funeral, and since Dennis had kept everything quiet, she didn’t find out until Camila was already home and feeling better.
When Sarah showed up, her eyes were red from crying and she didn’t hold back, letting out her anger at the Smith family before wrapping Camila in a hug. “Thank goodness you’re alright. I was worried sick. Don’t be afraid, Camila. Forgetting things isn’t a big deal. We’re all here for you. You’ll remember everything in time.”
Camila didn’t remember Sarah at all, but being together didn’t feel strange or awkward. She’d scrolled through their chat history and could see how close they were. Seeing Sarah’s red eyes and hearing her comforting words, Camila nodded. “I’m not scared anymore. I have my parents, Lillian, my husband, and now you. I’ll get my memory back soon, I know it.”
Sarah blinked, totally thrown off. “Hold on, did you say husband?” She looked over, eyebrows raised.
Camila pointed at Dennis, who was standing off to the side. “Him.”
Sarah stared at Dennis, trying to make sense of it. What on earth had happened while she was gone? How did things move so fast? When did Mr. Williams get promoted to husband?
Dennis didn’t even look surprised. His eyes just got a little darker, and the way he looked at Camila made it feel like he wanted to devour her. Camila caught his gaze and shivered a little, not entirely sure if she should be amused or nervous.
When Camila went to the bathroom, Sarah pulled Dennis aside. “Let’s not beat around the bush. Did you take advantage of Camila’s memory loss and trick her into something?”
She wasn’t about to let anyone mess with her best friend. Even if it was just a little thing, she wasn’t having it. If there was going to be a wedding, it needed to be done right, with a proper proposal and all the steps. You couldn’t just skip ahead and start calling yourself her husband.
