Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1033

After everyone had finished the memorial, Larry Adams was getting ready to take his mother’s ashes to the cemetery. He thought everything was done, but then, unexpectedly, more people arrived.

He glanced at the list of guests in his mind. Nearly everyone had already come to pay their respects. So who could possibly be showing up now? Worry twisted in his chest. For a second, he feared it might be the Adams family, coming to stir up trouble. But when he looked up, he saw something he hadn’t expected at all. An elderly couple, clinging to each other for support, slowly made their way inside. Behind them walked a middle-aged couple, and a young brother and sister.

Larry stopped in his tracks, completely stunned. He recognized them immediately. They were the Lane family. His mother’s family. His grandparents stood there, along with his aunt and uncle, and his two cousins.

After his mother died, the Lane family had been furious with the Adams family. The anger ran so deep that they cut off all contact. Larry had thought about reaching out to them before, but remembered how bitterly they’d rejected him. They’d called him a “bastard” and swore they’d never acknowledge him.

As a kid, Larry had been shy and sensitive. Those words stung. All these years, he never dared try contacting them again. Now, seeing them show up like this, he felt like his heart was spinning.

He took a deep breath, pulled himself together, and went to greet them.

His grandparents were already in tears. When they saw Samantha’s photo on display, her beautiful, smiling face, it was like she was still there, laughing and teasing them. Their grief hit them all over again.

“My poor girl,” his grandmother sobbed. “We were so blind. How could we let you marry someone like that?”

“Samantha, have you been angry with us all these years?” his grandfather choked out. “You never even came to us in a dream. How could you be so heartless?”

The two of them were so overcome that they could barely catch their breath. Larry’s aunt, their younger daughter, hurried to steady them. Even though she was crying too, she tried to comfort them. “Dad, Mom, if you keep this up, sister will see you from heaven and be sad, too.”
