Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 104

That night, Camila Davis was so insistent that her parents ended up staying over at her place.

The next morning, just after she woke up, Camila caught the faint sound of music drifting in through her window.

She jumped out of bed, pulled back the curtains, and looked down to see Lillian in the backyard, practicing her harmonica.

Her parents were right there with her.

Lillian had just finished a tune, and her grandparents were clapping like she’d just played at Carnegie Hall.

Melissa George gushed, “Our little sweetheart is amazing! I can’t believe she can play the harmonica so beautifully—and it sounded so good!”

Jerry Davis chimed in, “Grandpa’s proud of you, Lillian! That was fantastic!”

Lillian had already warmed up to her grandparents a lot, and their praise made her grin from ear to ear, looking all sweet and proud.

The morning sun was just right, casting a golden glow over the scene—it was almost like a picture from a family album.

Whatever gloom Camila had carried with her through the night melted away in that moment.

She headed back to her room to get washed up, then went downstairs to join everyone for breakfast—pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon, of course.

As for Jordan Smith, he’d already headed out early, clearly not interested in a big family breakfast. Camila didn’t give it a second thought.

After breakfast, Camila got ready to drive Lillian to school.

It was Lillian’s first day in class. Since Camila had already checked out the place and met the teachers, she wasn’t too worried.

Her parents, though, lifelong teachers themselves, were a bundle of nerves.

Lillian had never been apart from her for so long, never had to face a whole new world by herself.

During their earlier visits, Camila had always been right there. But today, Lillian was on her own. What if she panicked?

Camila couldn’t stop herself from rattling off instructions. “Mr. Adams, Lillian takes a while to get used to new places. If she can’t find the bathroom, could you help her out? And when she eats lunch, sometimes she gets lost in her own world and forgets to eat or drink—so if you could keep an eye on that too? And also—”

She went on and on, her usually composed face showing real worry for once.

Mr. Adams didn’t seem annoyed at all. He listened patiently, nodding along.

He clearly understood how hard it was for parents to let go, and treated her concern with total respect.

When Camila finally ran out of things to say, he smiled kindly. “Ms. Davis, don’t worry. I’ve got plenty of experience, and I’ll make sure Lillian is well taken care of. You can trust me—I promise she’s in good hands.”
