As the door clicked shut, Camila finally let herself breathe. She was still trapped, but at least her life wasn’t in immediate danger. RedFox had even sent someone in with food and water. For a prisoner, she couldn’t really complain.
Now that no one was watching, she took a better look around. This was definitely underground. No question about it. There was no way to call Dennis. He probably already knew she’d been kidnapped. Was he freaking out right now? The thought sent a wave of guilt through her. If she’d just been more careful, maybe things wouldn’t have turned out like this.
But there was no point in beating herself up. Camila made herself look on the bright side. If she could just stall long enough with treatment, Dennis would come for her. She believed that, more than anything.
RedFox wasn’t wasting time, either. He had his people dig into her background right away. Within a few hours, a whole file landed on his desk. Reading through it, he realized she wasn’t bluffing. She really was the heir to a medical school, and her skills were something else. Just as she’d said, she’d treated the head of the Smith family.
What RedFox didn’t know was that Camila had lost her memory. She wasn’t about to mention it, either. She couldn’t remember anything about the Smith family, only what she’d managed to hear from others.
When RedFox showed up again, he didn’t agree to her treating him right away. He stood in front of her, face dark and unreadable. “You lied to me. You said you cured that man’s legs, but I heard he never walked again. He’s still in a wheelchair. Are you trying to play me? Do you have any idea how dangerous that is?”
Camila didn’t blink. She met his eyes with a calm, steady look. “Maybe your people missed some details. He actually had a real shot at walking again. During my treatment, he was up and moving around. That should tell you my skills are not the problem. He just ended up listening to the wrong people, stopped treatment, and got mixed up with a quack. After that, things went downhill. That’s why he’s back in a wheelchair.”
She wasn’t just defending herself, either. Her eyes turned sharp as she looked at RedFox. “You found out about all that pretty fast. There’s no way you don’t know the whole story. You can stop testing me now, can’t you?”
