Sarah brought Larry back to her place without a second thought.
After they walked in, she put on a movie and grabbed two bottles of wine from the cabinet. Maybe it was because she was already feeling emotional, but it didn’t take long before Sarah was tipsy. The minute the alcohol hit her system, she dropped her guard and clung to Larry, tears streaming down her face.
“Do you think Camila’s going to be okay?” she sniffled, her voice wobbling. “She’s already had such a hard life. Why does everything have to be so unfair to her?”
Dennis had kept the whole G-1 situation secret, but Larry had found out from Aaron just how much danger Camila was in. He’d told Sarah everything. She hadn’t let it show these past few days, but she’d been a mess inside, constantly worrying. She didn’t dare tell Camila’s parents, terrified the news would be too much for them to handle. So she’d kept it all bottled up, letting it build until now.
With the wine loosening her tongue, she finally let everything out.
Larry had known Sarah forever. He understood how close she was to Camila, how much this would be eating at her. All he could do was gently rub her back and try to comfort her. “You have to trust the people at the institute. And you have to trust Dennis. He cares about Camila more than anyone. There’s no way he’d let anything happen to her.”
Sarah clung to him even tighter, her voice muffled by his shoulder. “It’s just so hard for her. Life’s never given her a break. Jordan Smith treated her like garbage, and now that she’s finally met someone good like Mr. Williams, she barely gets a taste of happiness before something else happens. Why can’t the universe just let her be happy?”
Larry let out a long sigh. “I know. And Dennis hasn’t had it easy either. He finally finds someone he loves, wants to settle down, and now this happens. I bet he feels even worse than we do.”
