Dennis Williams couldn’t take care of them forever. Besides, that child was a Smith. Even without her mother, she still had her father. It really wasn’t Dennis’s responsibility to step in.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Hazel said, letting the topic drop. She reached over and squeezed Cynthia’s hand, her smile bright and genuine. “Dennis loves kids. Once you’re together, you can have a few of your own. Trust me, he’ll forget all about Camila Davis before you know it…”
At home, Dennis pulled off his headphones. The coldness in his eyes could have turned the whole room to ice. It was like a storm was raging inside him. He had already guessed the Lee family was involved in Camila’s kidnapping, but hearing it confirmed was something else entirely. Right now, all he wanted was to crush them.
Camila came in with a plate of fresh fruit. The second she saw Dennis’s face, she knew something was wrong.
“Dennis, what’s going on? Did something happen?” she asked, worry in her voice.
The sound of her voice snapped him out of it. He brushed the darkness from his eyes and managed a gentle smile. “It’s nothing. Just thinking about a few things.”
Camila didn’t press. She picked up a piece of fruit with a toothpick and fed it to him. Dennis let her.
Camila beamed. “If it’s something that’s making you upset, just let it go for now. Come watch a movie with me and Lillian.”
“Alright.” Dennis didn’t want to waste another second on people who didn’t matter. He slipped his arm around Camila and led her back to the sofa.
Lillian was already there, bouncing with excitement. She patted the cushion next to her. “Daddy, Mommy, hurry up! The movie’s about to start!”
“We’re coming!”
Camila and Dennis sat down together. Lillian immediately crawled onto Dennis’s lap. Camila curled up beside him, her head on his shoulder, and Lightning, their big fluffy dog, stretched out on the rug at their feet. It was one of those perfect, cozy family moments.
Holding Camila and Lillian, Dennis felt something warm settle deep inside him. For a second, he thought, nothing and no one would ever take this happiness away from them.
