Camila Davis gave her best friend a gentle tug when she saw the look on her face.
But Sarah Brown didn’t budge an inch—she was frozen, staring so hard her eyes might as well have popped out.
Camila could only resist the urge to rub her forehead.
Who was it that swore she’d never fangirl over anyone so much she couldn’t look away?
Right then, Dennis Williams walked over, carrying Lillian in his arms.
The little girl spotted Camila and chirped, “Mommy! Sarah!” in her sweet, squeaky voice.
Sarah didn’t even blink.
Camila found it hilarious and hurried over.
Once she got close, she noticed Lillian’s hair was a little damp, her cheeks flushed like she’d just run a marathon.
“What happened, kiddo? You’re all sweaty,” she asked, scooping Lillian into her arms.
Dennis explained from beside her, “She was running around the backyard with Lightning and Lightning’s mom. Got a bit too excited, I think.”
Camila let out a laugh. “Well, sounds like you had a blast, huh?”
Dennis nodded, his voice calm and deep, “She’s fine now. Tonight’s little hypnosis session helped her forget all the scary stuff. Nothing to worry about—as long as there’s no repeat. Otherwise, the next time could be much worse.”
“I promise I’ll be extra careful! This was all my fault—I should’ve been watching her better,” Camila said earnestly. She looked up at him, “Thank you so much, Mr. Williams. You helped with her treatment, played with her, too. I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done without you tonight.”
Just thinking about the accident made her heart race with anxiety all over again.
Dennis just shrugged it off. “It’s okay. It’s over now. No need to beat yourself up, Ms. Davis.”
He checked his watch. “It’s getting late. I’ll be out of town for the next few days. If there’s an emergency, call Aaron.”
After a few moments of frantic wiping, she realized she’d been played.
“Oh, you brat! You totally got me!”
She lunged at Camila, tickling her until Camila shrieked and tried to escape. Sarah wouldn’t let up, and even poor Lillian got caught up in the playful chaos.
Lightning, seeing his little human under attack, darted over and tugged at Sarah’s skirt, barking in protest.
The three of them, plus one very determined dog, tumbled into the car, laughter echoing through the driveway as they finally settled down.
For the next week, Camila kept Lillian home to rest instead of sending her back to school. When she was sure Lillian was fully recovered, she finally let her go out again.
During that time, news about Nora Lewis’s case came through. The chief of police personally called Camila to inform her, “During the investigation, we spoke with several other parents. They all provided evidence that Nora Lewis performed unauthorized treatments. She’s definitely getting convicted—probably two or three years in prison. But… there’s been some behind-the-scenes maneuvering lately. Looks like someone’s trying to pull strings to get her sentence reduced.”
