Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 247

Camila Davis sat in stunned silence, a swirl of emotions tumbling through her chest.

She never expected—it was really Mary who had helped her!

Susan, equally astonished, couldn’t help but sigh. “Sweetheart, you did a good thing… But tell me, did this cause any trouble for you?”

Mary hesitated a beat.

Susan caught the hesitation right away and pressed, “Mary, did something happen? Please, be honest with me.”

Mary bit her lip. “Not really… I quit my job. I’m planning to take my mom back home—she’s feeling much better now, just needs some rest. I’m not as tight on money as before.”

Camila’s heart skipped. Was Mary forced out of the Smiths’ mansion after Jordan found out she’d helped her? Her mom’s recovery wouldn’t be cheap—Mary really needed a good job.

Camila didn’t hesitate. “Mary, don’t rush off just yet. Meet me tomorrow, okay? Let’s talk things over.”

Mary sounded shocked. “Ma’am—wait, Ms. Davis?”

“It’s me,” Camila replied, straight to the point. “You went out of your way to help me, lost your job, and didn’t even tell me. That’s not fair at all. Promise me you’ll come to the place I tell you tomorrow, all right?”

Mary didn’t even think about refusing. “Okay.”

Meanwhile, at the Smith estate.

Jordan Smith had been investigating non-stop. Who tipped off Camila about his whereabouts, letting her turn the tables on him? Losing the divorce battle had bruised his ego badly.

He’d even suspected his own mother, and Sandra Taylor. But after digging deep, he realized neither of them were involved.

That left just the household staff.

His mother’s people ran the main house, and she despised Camila. Even if they gossiped, it wouldn’t be to Camila’s benefit. The only possibility was among the staff.

That night, he’d only told the butler he wasn’t coming home.

A quick chat with the butler was all it took to get the truth.

“It was Mary,” the butler confessed. “She asked me if Mr. Smith was working late again, so I told her you wouldn’t be home… And, well, she quit today. Guess she felt guilty.”

Jordan’s expression darkened.

If that little maid really betrayed him, she was going to pay for it.

Just then, Sandra Taylor walked in.

Camila Davis, in the end, you lost.

Compete with me for Jordan?

On what grounds?

The next day, Camila met Mary at a cozy corner coffee shop.

As soon as she saw her, Mary greeted her respectfully. “Ms. Davis.”

Camila sat down, ordered two cappuccinos, and got straight to the point. “Mary, I couldn’t have gotten through the divorce without you. This—” she slid an envelope across the table, “—is for you. Please, take it. It’s a thank-you.”

Mary shook her head immediately. “No, Miss. I didn’t help you for a reward. I just couldn’t stand to see Mr. Smith treat you that way.

And… you helped my mom when no one else would. You even talked the butler into giving me an advance so I could pay for her treatment in time. I never got a chance to repay you. Now that I finally can, how could I take your money?”

Camila looked at her, concern in her eyes. “Is it really worth it, Mary? You lost your job over this. The Smiths paid pretty well.”
