Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 258

Camila Davis was caught off guard by how serious Dennis Williams sounded on the phone. She figured the person he wanted her to help must be close to his family—maybe even someone like an uncle or a godfather.

Of course, she didn’t hesitate. “Sure, I can give it a shot.”

Dennis, as always, was gentle and didn’t push her. “Just do your best. If it’s too much, don’t force yourself. Mr. Reed’s heart problems have been around for ages—most doctors have thrown in the towel.”

Camila felt a little warmth in her chest and agreed, “Alright.”

After they wrapped up, Dennis texted her an address.

It was the Reed family’s place in Harrisburg.

This was serious—someone’s life was on the line. Even though Camila was running on fumes after a sleepless night, she decided to head over right away.

As she hung up, Walter Wilson, her colleague, shot her a casual question. “Who was that on the phone just now?”

He hadn’t caught much of the conversation, but the voice sounded like a man’s. And Camila’s tone had been… different.

She answered without thinking, “Lillian’s therapist, remember? I mentioned him before. He asked if I could check on someone for him… The patient’s not doing well, so I’m going to see them.”

Walter frowned, clearly not thrilled. “You haven’t slept all night. Shouldn’t you rest first? You’ll get sick at this rate.”

“I’m not that fragile,” Camila shrugged off his concern, gathering her things to leave.

Walter just clicked his tongue—classic disapproval. He straightened his suit and said, “I’ll have the driver take you. If you drive yourself in this state, I’ll probably end up bailing you out of a fender bender tonight.”

Camila rolled her eyes at him. “Can’t you just wish me well for once?”

She grumbled, but she didn’t turn down his offer. For everyone’s sake, it was better not to risk driving while exhausted.

Later that evening, Camila left the research center and headed to the Reeds’ house.

As they chatted, Jordan was the first to spot Camila standing at the end of the walkway.

His eyes narrowed in surprise. “What are you doing here?”

The others turned to look.

Camila’s expression turned icy. Of all people, she hadn’t expected to run into those two—especially after they’d just stolen her research institute’s confidential files. She was furious, but she didn’t let it show. She hadn’t forgotten why she was here.

She looked straight at Mr. and Mrs. Reed and said calmly, “Hi, I’m Camila Davis. I was asked to come and check on Mr. Reed. Would it be alright if I came in?”

Before Mr. or Mrs. Reed could answer, Sandra jumped in, clearly rattled.

The Reed family was a valuable connection she’d worked hard to secure, and now Camila—of all people—was here to get involved.
