Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 323

"Uh, what?"

The words slipped out before Camila Davis could stop herself. Even Aaron, sitting up front, spun around with wide eyes.

Wait, what? Did he just invite her to move in? Wasn't that way too fast?

Dennis Williams caught sight of their stunned faces and finally realized how his suggestion must've sounded.

Keeping his cool, he explained, "Don't get me wrong. I meant, I've got staff at my place, so it’d be easier for someone to look after you. The accident happened because I invited you out, after all. If something happened while you were home alone, I’d feel responsible."

Camila hadn't really overthought it, but her heart still skipped a beat or two.

She forced herself to calm down and quickly replied, "Thank you, Mr. Williams, I appreciate it, but I’ll be fine at home. It’s safe, and I’m not exactly running around or anything. I’ll be careful—I doubt anything else is going to happen."

She tried to turn him down as politely as she could.

Sure, they’d gotten a lot closer recently, but suddenly moving in with him just seemed... off.

Besides, she couldn’t really explain it, but something in her gut made her nervous. The more time she spent around Dennis, the more she noticed how impressive he was.

He was like one of those unattainable, old-soul heroes in stories—cool, distant, but with this gentle warmth that made you want to reach out, even when you knew better.

The whole situation made her feel all sorts of mixed-up, and she wasn’t sure how to process it.

Dennis, for his part, didn’t seem to pick up on her inner turmoil, but he did realize that his sudden suggestion had probably been a bad call.

He almost never blurted things out before thinking. It bothered him, but he kept his expression neutral and said smoothly, "I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable."

He kept his voice calm and matter-of-fact. "Let’s not put any more strain on your ankle. This is quicker."

And with that, he strode off, carrying her as if she weighed nothing.

Camila’s heart pounded, her face growing warm. Sure, there had been a few accidental touches before—heck, he’d even carried her when she’d passed out in Cabinda—but this was the first time she’d been aware, fully conscious, and it felt entirely different.

His chest was broad and steady, his arms strong. She felt completely safe, even if she had no idea where to put her hands or feet.

Thankfully, the walk didn’t last long. They reached her door, and Dennis gently set her down.

"We’re here," he said softly.

Camila, still a little dazed, nodded and pressed her thumb to the keypad.
