Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 401

Camila Davis stared down at her phone, her expression a mix of hesitation and uncertainty.

She glanced at the two tickets in her hand. This art exhibition was a rare event—who knew when she’d get a chance like this again? Honestly, she’d been hoping to take her little girl with her.

But… Mr. Williams had clearly put a lot of thought into his own plans.

So Camila didn’t dwell on it for long before making up her mind.

Since she couldn’t go with Lillian, she’d just invite Sarah instead.

At least with Sarah along, she’d have someone to bounce opinions off of if she couldn’t decide which painting she liked best.

The next day, Camila handed one of the tickets to Sarah Brown.

When Sarah heard Camila wanted to invite her, she looked genuinely puzzled. “Why not take Mr. Williams? He’ll be with Lillian during her therapy anyway, and they’re doing all those outdoor sessions lately. Honestly, it’d make way more sense to give him the ticket.”

Sarah’s tone carried a hint of exasperation.

Thank goodness her best friend wasn’t actually trying to win Mr. Williams’ heart—if she were, this slow progress would probably give Sarah a heart attack!

Camila looked a bit sheepish. “Well, since I’m picking out a gift, it’d just feel sort of weird if he was there…”

Sarah thought, What’s so weird about that? Not giving it to him in person makes it sound like you’re planning a surprise or something.

She briefly considered giving Camila a nudge in the right direction, but in the end, she just grinned and let it go.

“All right, your call,” she said with a playful wink.

Honestly, Sarah thought Camila and Mr. Williams would be perfect together. He was a total catch: tall, handsome, successful, polite—the kind of guy you’d never expect to find in a place like this. Compared to Camila’s ex, Smith, Mr. Williams was in a whole different league.

If he ended up marrying Camila, he’d be getting the best wife ever—and as a bonus, adorable little Lillian. Talk about hitting the jackpot.

Camila, of course, had no idea what was running through her friend’s head. The plan was set.

On Saturday morning, Dennis Williams arrived to pick up Lillian.

Not that she’d say that out loud—she didn’t want to risk getting smacked.

A little later, Camila and Sarah set off for the art show.

When they arrived, the gallery was already filling up with people.

It was one of those high-profile events where everyone seemed to be on their best behavior—quiet voices, polite smiles, and no one crowding the exhibits.

The security was tight, and gallery staff in smart uniforms kept everything running smoothly.

The crowd was full of the kind of folks you could tell came from money or at least good taste.

Camila didn’t often go to these sorts of events, but thanks to Lillian’s budding love for art, she’d picked up a thing or two about painting and could at least fake her way through some basic art appreciation.
