At nine in the morning, Camila Davis’s phone buzzed with a message from Dennis Williams: *Come downstairs.*
Camila looked over at Lillian and let her know. The little one perked right up, quickly grabbing her things and slipping on her sneakers.
“You’re all heading out? If I stay home by myself, I’ll be bored out of my mind. Maybe I’ll go get my nails done,” Sarah Brown said, stretching with a grin. Then, on second thought, she decided to tag along with them instead.
The three of them strolled to the front gate of their apartment complex, and there was Dennis, standing by his car.
Lillian, who hadn’t seen him for days, lit up immediately. She dashed over and flung her arms around him, shouting, “Daddy!”
Now, Camila already knew Lillian called Dennis “Daddy,” but seeing it in person was another thing entirely for Sarah. The way that “Daddy” rolled off her tongue—so warm and natural—it almost made Sarah do a double-take.
Just then, a loud, hacking cough erupted from the car. The sound was oddly familiar. Camila glanced over and spotted Larry Adams in the passenger seat, looking like he’d just woken up from a nap—face flushed, nearly choking on his own spit.
Camila laughed and called out, “Morning, Mr. Adams! Didn’t expect to see you here—what brings you out?”
Larry tried to respond, but was still caught up coughing, totally thrown by how smoothly Lillian called Dennis “Daddy.” He’d heard about it, but seeing it for himself? That was something else.
Dennis as a dad…who would’ve thought?
At that moment, Lillian was still clinging to Dennis’s neck, nuzzling him and speaking in her sweet, little-girl voice. “Lillian missed Daddy! Did Daddy miss Lillian?”
Dennis hugged her tight, his eyes soft as he replied, “Of course I did.”
Lillian beamed, grinning so wide her cheeks dimpled.
Larry looked on from the car, practically gaping. *Man, they really look like father and daughter…* He’d never seen Dennis so gentle before. Was this really the same guy he’d known for years?
Meanwhile, Aaron, who’d been in the backseat, gave Larry a sympathetic pat on the back. The poor guy had been yanked out of bed to play chauffeur, and now he was coughing up a lung.
Dennis, noticing Larry’s predicament, shrugged and answered for him. “He’s coming with us today.”
Camila was a little surprised—Dennis usually didn’t invite others along—but she just nodded and handed Larry a bottle of water.
Seeing this, Sarah perked up. “Wait, we can bring more people? What’s the plan? Can I come too?”
She was itching for something to do.
Camila just glanced over at Dennis for the final word.
