Camila Davis finally understood what was going on.
A little puzzled, she asked, “Wait, I thought Mr. Adams was going to crash for the night? How’d you guys end up drag racing instead?”
Larry Adams, pale and still gulping down water, finally caught his breath and wasted no time complaining about Sarah Brown’s wild side.
“I wanted to sleep, believe me,” he said, shaking his head dramatically. “But Ms. Brown here said she was bored and wanted to go for a spin. So I figured, why not? Next thing I know, my soul’s practically floating behind the car, scared out of its mind! I’m just not built for this, man.”
Camila couldn’t help but laugh. If anyone knew Sarah, it was her—always restless, always up for a thrill ride. And once they were out of the city, there was no containing her need for speed.
Poor Mr. Adams, though. He clearly wasn’t used to this kind of adventure.
Camila tried not to just watch the show. She quickly dug through her tote and handed Larry some motion sickness tablets. “Here, take these. You’ll feel better.”
Without a word, Larry swallowed the pills and chased them down with more water.
Once he looked a little less green, Camila turned her attention to Sarah. “Seriously, give the poor guy a break. Mr. Adams came out with us today and hasn’t even had a chance to rest yet. Maybe you could take it easy on him for the rest of the trip? Consider it payback for the impromptu drag race.”
“No problem!” Sarah shot back cheerfully. She turned to Larry, suddenly all concern. “Mr. Adams, you got any strength left? Need a hand walking?”
Larry gave her a look, still looking half-dead. “I’ve got no strength at all. My legs are jelly. Honestly, I think I need someone to carry me.”
Sarah glanced at her own skinny arms, paused, and admitted, “Yeah, that’s not happening. But I think I saw a group over there offering piggyback rides up the hill. I can totally hire someone to carry you if you want?”
Larry stared at her in disbelief. The mental image of himself, six-foot-three, being carted up the hill by a bunch of strangers was… a little too much.
He waved her off, fast. “No, no, I’m good. I think I’m getting my strength back already.”
Sarah grinned. “Mr. Adams, always thinking of others. Please, after you.”
Larry just sighed, deciding it wasn’t worth arguing with her.
Their ridiculous back-and-forth had Camila laughing again. “Well, I guess this hike isn’t going to be boring after all.”
Dennis Williams, standing nearby, definitely agreed.
Soon enough, everyone packed up their gear and got ready to start hiking.
Before they set off, Dennis put Lillian down and asked, “You think you can hike on your own, Lillian?”
The little one balled her tiny fists and nodded, determined. “Lillian can do it! I wanna reach the very top!”
Sarah and Larry both melted at how cute she was.
