“Oh, and one more thing—” Camila emphasized, “this herb looks almost exactly like regular weeds, so don’t mix them up.”
“Remember, it needs to have nine leaves, and the veins on the leaves have to be red. Got it?”
“Yeah, I got it!” Sarah Brown replied, saving the picture on her phone so she wouldn’t mess up.
With that, the two of them set off together, combing through the brush nearby.
It wasn’t long before Aaron and Larry Adams spotted them and wandered over.
Larry raised an eyebrow, curious. “What are you two up to?”
“Looking for some wild herbs,” Sarah answered honestly. She glanced at the two guys—free help, why not take advantage? “If you’re not busy, lend a hand. We’re looking for something like this—”
She showed them the same picture Camila had sent her.
Just like that, their search party doubled from two to four.
…
Meanwhile, downtown, inside a cozy coffee shop—
Cynthia Lee sat across from a man dressed in black. He was updating her in a low voice. “We followed them to the base of the mountain, but didn’t go any further—didn’t want Mr. Smith’s people to spot us. You know the kind of folks he keeps around. Even though I’m here on Mr. Morris’s orders, there are boundaries I can’t cross.”
There was a note of respect—maybe even fear—when he mentioned Dennis Williams.
Cynthia nodded slightly. “Understood. Just tell me what you know.”
Juan got right to it. “Mr. Smith went hiking today with Mr. Adams. Looked like a casual trip. Two women came along, plus a kid, and then Mr. Smith’s assistant and his bodyguard…”
At the word “women,” Cynthia’s expression tightened. “Women? Hiking?”
She wondered if she’d misheard.
Dennis Williams, bringing women on a hike? That didn’t sound like him at all. He was always the golden boy, top of his class, everything he did had a purpose. Even horseback riding or target shooting—stuff that looked like fun—were just networking opportunities for him.
He never did anything just for leisure. And he certainly never showed much interest in women, so why go hiking with them?
