Larry Adams watched the whole scene unfold from the sidelines. After learning what Lillian had been through, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy.
So young, and already carrying such a heavy burden.
He couldn’t stop thinking about how the Smiths had stirred up trouble just a moment ago. If they could act that brazenly in front of everyone, Larry could only imagine how much worse it must’ve been for Lillian and her mom when they were living under the Smiths’ roof.
Poor Ms. Davis. She really got the short end of the stick…
And the worst part? Even after the divorce, she still couldn’t escape that nightmare.
Larry let out a long sigh and turned to Dennis Williams, “So, Dennis, what’s your plan for Lillian? Are you trying to help her get her memory back?”
He hesitated. “If she forgets everything, will it affect her recovery?”
Dennis shook his head gently. “Sometimes forgetting the pain is a blessing. It might help her heal faster, at least emotionally… But honestly, this isn’t my call. We need to ask her mom.”
Larry nodded in understanding. “Alright, let’s wait till Ms. Davis is better, then.”
As the two of them spoke quietly in the hospital corridor, nurses were wheeling Camila Davis out of the ER and into a private room. She was in fresh pajamas now, her fever under control, and was hooked up to an IV drip, still fast asleep.
The doctor explained her condition to Dennis, “She’s got a nasty bruise on her lower back—probably from a fall. Nothing’s broken, though. Just keep applying some ointment and massage it gently. She should be fine in a few days.”
Dennis remembered the fall when they were coming down from the hill. “Got it. Thanks, doc.”
It had been a long, exhausting night for everyone.
Camila was still out cold, so it was clear they’d all be spending the night at the hospital.
Sarah Brown had been planning to stay and help out with Camila and Lillian, maybe even call Susan over for backup later. But she kept thinking about how Dennis had stood up for Lillian earlier that evening—he’d been so confident, so decisive, totally showing up the Smiths. Honestly, it was kind of hot.
Part of her couldn’t help wishing her best friend might end up with a guy like Dennis. He was nothing like Jordan Smith; Dennis would actually cherish someone he cared about.
Her friend had been hurt before. She deserved someone who could help her heal. And Dennis Williams seemed like a perfect fit.
Besides, from what Sarah could tell, there was definitely something brewing between those two. Maybe all they needed was a little nudge—and a bit of time alone.
So, when Dennis offered to stay the night at the hospital with Aaron, Sarah quietly decided not to volunteer herself. She just waited outside, keeping watch.
Larry noticed, too, and didn’t make any move to leave. But Dennis, ever the gentleman, finally spoke up, “It’s getting late, guys. Why don’t you both head home and get some rest? Aaron and I will take care of things here tonight.”
