Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 443

Dennis Williams froze for a second, surprise flickering across his face.

Camila Davis heard footsteps and glanced up. The moment she saw Dennis, her mind went completely blank.

She hurriedly dropped the shirt she’d been folding, her ears turning bright red. “Williams—Mr. Williams?”

Dennis snapped out of it, quickly looking away as if nothing had happened. His tone was cool and steady. “When did you wake up?”

Camila felt her cheeks flush. She was mortified. “Just… just woke up. I thought no one was here, so I—”

She trailed off, too embarrassed to finish.

Dennis gave a small nod. “I just stepped out to take a call. Are you feeling okay? Did your injury get worse?”

Camila avoided his gaze, staring down at her hands. “No, not really. It just hurt a bit when I got up, so I wanted to check.”

Dennis nodded, understanding. “The doctor said you took quite a fall, but luckily nothing’s broken. Just stick to the medication and you’ll be fine.”

“Okay,” Camila said, nodding again.

She’d already checked herself earlier and knew it wasn’t serious.

Not wanting to dwell on the awkwardness, she quickly changed the subject, her tone a little apologetic. “Sorry, did I cause you trouble? It’s late and you’re still at the hospital. Where’s Sarah?”

“No need to apologize,” Dennis replied easily. “She and Larry headed home already. I didn’t have anything urgent, so I stayed. It’s no trouble.”

He glanced at her again. “You were out cold for a while. Are you hungry? You just got over a fever. You should eat something to get your strength back.”

Camila hadn’t noticed until he mentioned it, but her stomach gave a loud growl in response.

Dennis didn’t even wait for her answer. He turned to his security detail and sent someone off to grab food.

Less than ten minutes later, his guy returned with a steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup, complete with a side of crackers and a slice of buttered toast. The smell was warm and comforting.

Camila tucked in, eating slowly and carefully.

When she was almost done, Dennis finally brought up Lillian—her daughter—and what happened earlier at the hospital with the Smith family.

The moment Camila heard the name, her brows knitted in worry. “Did they give you a hard time? Did they do anything to Lillian?”

The way she looked so anxious made Dennis chuckle softly.

Camila hesitated, then said, “I want to freshen up before I sleep.”

He frowned. “You really shouldn’t be moving around too much. You’re still not well.”

She shook her head. “I’m all sweaty and sticky from the fever. I won’t be able to sleep unless I clean up a bit. I just want to wipe off and change clothes. Don’t worry, I can handle it myself.”

Dennis still looked unsure. After a moment, he said, “I could call a nurse to help?”

“No need,” Camila replied quickly, waving him off. “It’s late, no point bothering anyone. I’m a doctor, remember? You can trust me to know my limits.”

Dennis had to smile at that. “Alright. I’ll wait outside. Yell if you need anything.”

He paused, then handed her a tube of ointment. “If you can reach, put some of this on your lower back.”

Camila took the ointment, nodding. “Thank you, Mr. Williams.”

She slipped into the bathroom. After a quick wash, she stood in front of the mirror, trying to rub the ointment into her lower back.

The bruise was in an awkward spot, high up and just out of easy reach. She managed to smear the cream on, but massaging it in was a whole different story—her arms just wouldn’t bend that way.
