As far as I know, that Smith family guy never showed Lillian any care or affection. She never had a place for him in her heart; once he was gone, she moved on without a second thought.
As for Ms. Davis…
Dennis Williams was about to continue when his phone buzzed.
He glanced down and saw a message from Camila Davis.
She’d written a heartfelt apology:
“Lillian isn’t in the best place right now—she might say things that make you uncomfortable, and I hope you won’t take them to heart. You’re the first male figure in her life who’s ever treated her with such kindness. She grew up watching cartoons that made her believe all dads are loving to their daughters. So when her illness relapsed, she truly thought of you as her father…
The way you care for her is real, tangible, and unique. I see that too. You’re one of a kind, Mr. Williams!
Once she’s feeling better, I promise I’ll explain everything to her properly.”
It was a short message, but it made both her and Lillian’s feelings clear.
Exactly the question Larry Adams had raised earlier.
Dennis found his eyes lingering on the words “one of a kind.”
He felt… inexplicably happy.
He quickly typed back: “I understand.”
Larry, who’d been watching him, saw Dennis’s expression soften in an instant and promptly shut his mouth.
Well, looks like I was just overthinking.
There’s no way Dennis would ever be seen as some stand-in.
Besides, Ms. Davis is far too sensible to ever confuse Dennis with that loser Jordan Smith.
Dennis is incredible! Reliable, caring, and accomplished.
That Jordan Smith isn’t even fit to shine his shoes.
No wonder Lillian adores Dennis—of course she’d see him as her dad.
Satisfied, Larry dropped the subject.
Later that day, the two of them returned to Misty Vale House.
Even though Dennis had spent last night at the hospital with Camila Davis and barely slept, he didn’t go straight to bed when they got home. Instead, he headed to his study to organize paperwork.
Larry peeked over curiously and realized Dennis was sorting through Lillian’s treatment notes and some research reports.
Larry was floored.
He’d always known Dennis was meticulous and responsible, but he hadn’t expected this level of detail…
Suddenly, Larry felt swept up in it all.
He finally understood why, despite both of them working in the same field and both being involved with Lillian’s care, she was so much more attached to Dennis.
