Once she got to school, Lillian borrowed Larry Adams’ phone and dialed her dad with a dramatic sigh. “Dad, Mom’s just working all the time now! She barely eats, she doesn’t care about her health at all… Dad, you have to do something!”
Dennis Williams was a bit surprised to hear that.
He figured Camila Davis had enough sense to take care of herself, so he tried to reassure his little girl. “Don’t worry, honey. Your mom’s not a kid, she knows what she’s doing.”
But Lillian was insistent. “That’s not true! Grandpa told me Mom always forgets to eat when she’s busy. She’s always been like this.”
Then, as if struck by inspiration, she added, “Dad, can we go pick up Mom tonight? Please?”
Dennis hesitated. It felt a little weird to meddle in Camila’s life like that.
Lillian seized the opportunity, her voice soft and sugary. “Daddy, I miss you too! We haven’t seen you in days. Don’t you miss me and Mom, even a little?”
Her sweet, childish tone was impossible to resist.
Dennis caved almost immediately. “Alright, you win. I miss you too. I’ll come pick you up tonight, okay?”
Lillian was over the moon. “Yay! I’ll wait for you, Daddy…”
She stayed on the phone, chattering away and piling on the sweetness until Dennis finally had to laugh and say goodbye.
Larry, who’d been eavesdropping nearby, gave Lillian a huge thumbs-up.
Impressive, he thought. No wonder Dennis spoils her so much—she could melt anyone’s heart, even an ice-cold guy like him.
After making plans with her dad, Lillian spent the whole day in high spirits.
That evening, Dennis arrived right on time at the preschool to pick her up.
Lillian ran to him as fast as her little legs would carry her. “Daddy!”
Dennis scooped her up with a big grin.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and squealed, “Let’s go rescue Mom!”
Dennis laughed at her choice of words but played along. “Alright, kiddo, let’s go!”
He buckled Lillian into the backseat and told Aaron, his driver, to head toward the research center.
When they arrived, the receptionist, Mary, recognized them right away and waved them in, leading them to the lounge and bringing out snacks and drinks.
“These are all sweet, Lillian—you’ll love them!”
Lillian accepted them politely. “Thank you, Mary! I love cookies!”
Then she asked, “Where’s Mom?”
Mary smiled. “Ms. Davis is still in the lab, honey. You’ll have to wait a little bit.”
