The little one’s face changed instantly—her eyes lit up, and she nodded her tiny head eagerly. “Lillian gets it! Daddy, be careful on your way!”
Camila Davis couldn’t help but stare in astonishment.
She turned to Dennis Williams, curiosity written all over her face. “What on earth did you say to Lillian? She never listens to anyone like that!”
Dennis just chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “That’s a secret between me and Lillian...”
Lillian nodded solemnly, repeating, “Uh-huh, secret!”
Watching the two of them in such perfect sync, Camila couldn’t decide whether to laugh or sigh.
Her sweet, obedient little girl actually had secrets with someone else now. But she didn’t press for details.
Whatever Dennis had promised, it clearly worked—Camila could relax, knowing Lillian wouldn’t be a handful tonight.
After saying their goodbyes to Dennis, Camila and Lillian headed upstairs.
That evening, Camila noticed Lillian was unusually excited before bed, practically bouncing on the mattress as if she were waiting for something magical to happen.
It was so obvious that Camila couldn’t help but laugh and wonder. Was this Dennis’s doing? What had he told her?
But Lillian wouldn’t say a word, no matter how Camila coaxed.
Two days sped by, and the fifteenth rolled around.
That afternoon, Sarah Brown showed up at Camila’s office, bursting with energy. “You have to come with me. Right now. It’s important.”
Camila blinked at her in confusion. “Where are we going?”
Sarah just grinned and shook her head. “You’ll see. Just trust me—it’s big!”
Sarah rarely made a fuss about anything, so Camila didn’t argue. She clocked out early and followed her out the door.
Before she knew it, Sarah had whisked her off to Harrisburg’s grandest hotel.
Camila barely had time to process where she was before Sarah was shoving her into a dressing room, handing her a gorgeous evening gown, and summoning a team of stylists to work their magic.
“Are we going to the Oscars or something?” Camila joked, peering at Sarah in the mirror.
Sarah had changed too, but her dress was simple and understated compared to Camila’s show-stopping ensemble.
Sarah grinned mischievously. “You could say that. Actually, you’re tonight’s star!”
Camila’s mind was spinning. “What are you talking about?”
“Come on, it’s time for your grand entrance!” Sarah grabbed her hand and towed her down the hall.
They stopped in front of a set of double doors. When they swung open, Camila was met with a dazzling sight: the ballroom was packed with familiar faces, sparkling lights, and lavish decorations.
That’s when it finally hit her.
It was her birthday.
