Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 479

That night, the birthday party wrapped up before 10:30.

The charity project on the table was a pretty big deal—definitely not something you could hash out in a couple of hours. Everyone understood, so they agreed to meet for an early breakfast meeting the next day, with the medical school taking the lead.

No one from the higher-ups objected; it got a green light on the spot.

Later, after seeing off the last guest, Walter Wilson volunteered to take the lead on drafting the proposal. He had a big team, plenty of experience, and could move things along quickly.

Mr. Morris didn’t mind. In fact, he clapped the young man on the shoulder and said, “We’ll have some folks from the med school help out as well.”

“Sounds good, whatever you say,” Walter replied easily. The truth was, he had his own reasons for volunteering—he wanted Camila Davis to see he was actually useful for something.

He also wanted to stick around to figure out who’d brought in that livestreaming equipment—nobody had a clue yet.

Camila Davis, meanwhile, had plans with Dennis Williams, so she helped her mentor get home first. As for her parents, she was short on time and asked Sarah Brown to give them a ride.

Sarah, of course, didn’t mind at all. She grinned at Camila, her look full of teasing. “I get it—girl’s got a date. Don’t worry, I’ll handle your parents, and hey, you don’t even have to come home tonight if you don’t want to.”

Camila laughed. “What are you talking about? Why wouldn’t I go home? I’ve got Lillian with me, remember? What do you think I’m gonna do—leave her at a bar?”

Sarah just waggled her eyebrows and said, “Hey, it’s a special night. You could let your fairy goddaughter hang out with me—look, she’s already yawning. Kid’s ready to crash.”

Standing nearby, Jerry Davis and Melissa George caught the tail end of the conversation. Jerry said, “Camila, if you need to stay for the cleanup, your mom and I can take Lillian home.”

Melissa nodded in agreement. “Sarah’s right, sweetheart. Look at her—she’s about to fall asleep on her feet.”

Camila glanced down at her daughter. Sure enough, Lillian was rubbing her eyes, barely listening, and letting out a big, sleepy yawn. She looked so cute, Camila’s heart melted a little.

Melissa crouched down and asked gently, “Lillian, honey, want to go home with Grandma and Grandpa and hear a bedtime story?”

Lillian paused for a second, sleepiness winning out. She gave a tiny nod, her eyes watering. “Okay… I’ll go with Grandma and Grandpa.”

Camila sighed and gave in. Jerry scooped up his granddaughter, and Lillian nestled into his arms, already half asleep.

Melissa smiled at Camila. “We’ll head out, then. Take care of yourself, honey.”
