Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 50

Nathan Gates hesitated, shooting a helpless look at Jordan Smith.

Jordan’s face was stone-cold, his dark eyes sharp as ice, drilling straight through to the backseat where Camila Davis sat.

Camila ignored him completely, focusing instead on calming little Lillian, who was still shaken by the blaring car horn.

Jordan was seething. It took him a moment before he finally bit out, “Just let them go!”

Nathan barely waited for him to finish before he stepped aside.

Sarah Brown rolled her eyes so hard it was a wonder they didn’t get stuck. She immediately shifted gears, stomped on the gas, and sped the car away from that mess.

Once they were clear, Sarah’s temper boiled over. “That cold-hearted bastard, Jordan Smith! Seriously! Doesn’t even stand up for his wife in public, just runs to defend his side chick. Didn’t even ask what happened—just decided you were guilty, end of story!

What’s wrong with his brain? Did he bang it up when he wrecked his legs back in the day? Maybe the nerve damage spread, because the guy has zero judgment now. Even I can’t watch this train wreck anymore!”

Camila had been trying to calm herself, but Sarah’s words brought back all the old hurts and guilt she’d been forced to shoulder. Her chest felt tight with pain.

She let out a bitter laugh. “You really think he can’t see the truth? Jordan’s always been sharp. He just… he cares about Sandra Taylor. She’s his golden girl, and he can’t stand to see her upset. So he lets her get away with anything and doesn’t even bother with the facts.”

Sarah’s nostrils flared. She felt even angrier—and more heartbroken for her friend.

Camila had never really told her the details of her marriage before, just that Sandra Taylor was the reason she wanted out. But she’d never guessed it was this bad.

All those years Camila spent caring for him, giving up everything—wiped out by one word from Sandra. Jordan never trusted her, not for a second. Three years of sacrifice, just thrown away.

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. “Camila, they’ll get what’s coming to them. Guys like Jordan—cheating with one hand, eating his cake and eyeing the pie—never end up happy. You’re amazing, and if he can’t see that, it’s his loss.

She’d let her skills as a doctor rust over the last few years, putting everything on hold for Jordan. Now, she dusted off her old medical textbooks—her late mentor’s handwritten notes, full of rare treatment methods and nearly-forgotten herbal remedies.

It was the kind of medical wisdom you didn’t get in regular med school, passed down like a secret family recipe. She remembered most of it, but not like she used to—when she could recite every word.

So she spent hours reviewing, mapping out her next steps, and thinking about which field of medicine she wanted to focus on.

Through it all, she kept thinking of that mysterious psychologist. How was she supposed to get in touch with him?

Sarah had already called in every favor she could, but no one knew anything. Was she supposed to stake out the military base and hope to catch him? She’d probably get arrested as a spy before she even got close.

The more Camila thought about it, the more frustrated she became.
