Dennis Williams didn’t doubt a word Aaron said.
That kind of pain, right before you lose your mind—he still remembered what that felt like.
He just wasn’t sure if he’d done anything really out of line after that.
So Dennis just asked Aaron straight up.
Aaron’s heart was pounding.
He blinked, still avoiding Dennis’s gaze. “No, sir. When I went to get Ms. Davis, you were in the bathroom, taking a cold shower. After that, Ms. Davis and I helped you out.”
Dennis listened and found nothing suspicious about Aaron’s story, but he couldn’t shake the feeling he was missing something.
That nagging sense of unease just wouldn’t go away.
He couldn’t figure out what it was, so he just let it go for now.
Aaron, worried Dennis might keep pressing, quickly changed the subject. “Mr. Williams, you slept all night. You should have something to eat—there’s oatmeal and scrambled eggs in the kitchen. You’ll need your breakfast before you take your meds.”
“Yeah, sure.”
Dennis nodded and headed straight to the dining room.
After breakfast, he called Camila Davis.
Camila was already up, getting ready to head to the research center.
When she saw Dennis’s name pop up on her phone, her heart skipped a beat, a weird mix of nerves and anticipation bubbling up inside her.
After all, considering what happened last night, she had no idea how much he actually remembered—or what he wanted to say.
She hesitated for a good few seconds, but before she could answer, the call cut off.
Camila stared at her now-dark phone, feeling oddly disappointed.
What was with all these crazy emotions?
She shook herself out of it, about to put her phone away, when the screen lit up again.
A message this time.
From Dennis.
“You busy?”
“Aaron filled me in about last night. Hope I didn’t freak you out.”
Camila read the message and instantly realized—he didn’t remember!
Thank God. That was a relief.
At least now she wouldn’t have to feel so awkward around him.
That morning at breakfast, her lips were still a little swollen. Of course, Mr. Morris, the senior researcher and her mentor, picked up on it and started grilling her with questions. Luckily, she managed to brush him off with a quick answer.
Still, she had no idea how to face Dennis, so she decided not to reply right away. She’d just let it sit for a while.
Camila left for work and soon got caught up in her lab work at the institute.
It wasn’t until lunchtime that she finally picked up her phone again.
To her surprise, she saw several missed calls.
Especially after Dennis’s father had taken the Collins heir under his wing and even changed the kid’s last name.
Since then, the Collins and Williams families had been like oil and water.
So, when they ran into each other this time, a fight broke out.
Mr. Williams Sr. had a heart attack on the spot and was rushed to the hospital.
Dennis was ice-cold the whole plane ride back to Chicago.
He barely glanced at his phone after landing—he just headed straight to the hospital.
Camila waited a while for a reply, but wasn’t disappointed when none came.
She figured things must be crazy in Chicago, and Dennis was too busy to check his messages.
She shrugged it off and got back to work.
But she didn’t expect more drama to hit that evening.
Walter Wilson called, sounding pissed. “Raymond Mitchell’s at it again—the guy has no shame! I thought things had calmed down on social media, but I seriously underestimated how far he’d go.”
Camila frowned. “What now? What’s he done this time?”
Walter wasn’t sure how to explain. “Just check the news yourself. The guy’s clearly not letting up on Mr. Morris!”
Camila stopped asking questions, pulled out her phone, and started scrolling.
She didn’t even have to search—the latest scandal was plastered all over the trending topics.
