Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 508

Camila Davis walked over, poured a glass of water for her mentor, and sat down beside him. “I’ve seen everything online,” she said, her voice low but urgent. “You rushed back here so fast—I’m guessing you’ve got something on your mind to discuss.”

Mr. Morris just sat there, silent.

She knew he understood what she meant. But still…

“About Catherine Watson’s pregnancy—I really had no idea,” he finally said, shaking his head. “I never thought Raymond Mitchell would stoop so low as to throw a child into all this mess.”

Patrick, sitting nearby with his brow furrowed, chimed in. “We never really figured out why she took her own life. Was Catherine really pregnant when she died? If she was, then she… she must’ve taken her own life with her unborn child. For Raymond to use even his own kid for attention—God, it’s disgusting. Like vultures feeding off the dead.”

Camila didn’t bother checking the online gossip anymore. She looked straight at her mentor. “Aren’t you going to do anything? Before, I understood your silence—the rumors weren’t out of control. But now the Smith Group’s gotten involved, it’s gone viral. You can’t just sweep this under the rug anymore. This could really hurt you.”

Patrick nodded. “She’s right, Mr. Morris. You’ve done more than enough for Catherine… Don’t keep putting yourself last.”

Mr. Morris stayed quiet for a long time. Finally, he just said, “I need to think about it,” and, with a heavy sigh, stood up and headed upstairs, his mood shifting from anger to quiet resignation.

Camila watched him go, baffled by his hesitation. After all, it was Catherine who’d betrayed him first.

Camila had always seen things in black and white. She just couldn’t wrap her head around his reaction.

Patrick, seeing her confusion, let out a sigh. She turned to him. “Patrick, is there something about my mentor and Catherine I don’t know?”

Patrick glanced up the stairs—Mr. Morris’s door was already closed—then leaned in, lowering his voice. “There’s a part of their story most people don’t know. When Catherine was just a baby, Mr. Morris found her abandoned. He was just a little kid himself, maybe five or six. His parents took pity on the baby and took her in, but not as a daughter—more like an apprentice. Outsiders never really knew the truth.”

“Mr. Morris and Catherine grew up together, practically side by side. He always looked out for her—never let anyone mess with her. When they got older, the elders at the medical college thought they’d make a perfect match, so they proposed the idea. Not an arranged marriage, mind you—they asked both of them. Catherine agreed first, seemed happy about it, and that’s how the engagement happened.”
