Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 530

Cynthia Lee glanced over at Camila Davis.

Camila didn’t know Cynthia, so she just shrugged it off, looping her arm through her best friend's as they headed out.

It was Camila who got left behind, frozen in place as the echo of footsteps faded away.

She honestly couldn’t believe it—she’d just stepped into the ladies’ room to fix her makeup and wound up overhearing that kind of conversation.

Dennis Williams—the “Mr. Williams” they were talking about—he had a fiancée?

They were getting engaged, like, soon?

Camila had never heard a word about it.

Dennis had never so much as hinted at it.

Suddenly, things started to make sense.

Maybe that was why Dennis hadn’t come back to Harrisburg. Sure, he’d been injured, the Collins family had given him some trouble, but the engagement—yeah, that probably had something to do with it, too.

He was getting engaged? To that girl from earlier?

Camila replayed the memory: the woman was stunning, clearly from a well-off family—Ms. Taylor, if she remembered right.

Composed, graceful, with that kind of warm elegance people notice right away.

If Dennis’s family approved, she had to be someone special—his equal in every way.

Good for him, Camila thought, trying to convince herself.

Dennis was just that kind of guy—outstanding. Someone out of the ordinary, way out of reach for most.

This should be a happy thing. As a friend, she should congratulate him.

That’s what her head told her. But her heart wasn’t having it.

The walk back to the private dining room felt endless, each step weighed down by emotions she couldn’t quite name—one after another, welling up from deep inside her.

It was like water slowly seeping through cracks in stone: at first, barely noticeable. But by the time she opened the door and saw Dennis waiting inside, the feeling wasn’t sweet at all—it was bitter.

She couldn’t even say why.

She just stared at Dennis, unable to get a word out.

Dennis noticed she was back and started to greet her, but stopped, brow furrowing with concern.

“You okay? You look a little pale. Are you not feeling well?”

His gentle voice was full of genuine worry.

Camila forced a weak smile. “I—do I?”

Dennis stood up right away and came over to her.

Her complexion really was a shade paler than when she left.
