Camila Davis still couldn’t shake off her worry.
She watched as Aaron and the others led the stumbling man outside, then turned to Dennis Williams, curiosity getting the better of her. “What happened to Mr. Adams? I’ve never seen him like that before—he looked so lost, it scared me. Is he going to be alright?”
Dennis shook his head. “Something happened, yeah. But he’ll be fine. He’ll bounce back, for sure.”
As for the details…
Dennis didn’t elaborate. It wasn’t just about Larry Adams himself—there was the death of his mother, and all the drama and bad blood within the Adams family.
He’d already finished his own investigation, and the results were in.
Larry now knew that the person he trusted most had been the one responsible for his mother’s death. All those years of guilt and remorse, all that time spent avoiding home to try and make amends—it all felt like a cruel joke now.
The truth had hit him hard, and he just couldn’t handle it. That’s why he’d chosen to drown his sorrows tonight.
But Dennis saw no reason to dump all of that on Camila Davis. He knew her. Even as a friend, she’d get way too emotionally invested.
He checked his watch and broke the silence. “It’s getting late. Let me drive you all home.”
“Okay…”
Camila had no idea what else to say, so she just nodded and went to find Sarah Brown.
Sarah had had way too much wine earlier and had fallen asleep on the couch. When Camila tried to wake her, she was all groggy and wobbly, barely able to stand.
Camila had to practically hold her upright—her steps were so unsteady, it was like she was floating.
“Oh my God, Camila, I think I’m flying… No, wait, it’s like I’m walking on clouds. Oh no, I’m gonna fall!”
Sarah’s knees buckled, and she clung to Camila like a lifeline.
Camila couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re not falling, I’ve got you. You’re safe.”
“Ohhh, good!”
Sarah may or may not have understood, but she grinned goofily. “Then hold me tight, okay?”
“Will do!”
Camila sighed, steadying her friend and steering her toward the door.
But then Sarah suddenly looked up, catching sight of the tall figure of Dennis Williams nearby.
“Whoa-ho!”
She exclaimed, smacking Camila on the shoulder, shouting, “Camila! I just dreamed about Dennis Williams! And now here he is, right in front of us!”
Dennis raised an eyebrow. That was… an odd thing to say.
