Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 547

Camila Davis opened her mouth, but the words just wouldn’t come.

Should she ask him if the engagement rumor was true?

If it was, did that mean they’d have to stop seeing each other? But what right did she have to even ask about it?

If it was about having feelings… well, that was all one-sided anyway. If he didn’t like her at all, blurting it out would just make things weird, and she’d probably lose him as a friend, too.

That was the last thing Camila wanted.

Her mind spun with worries, too many to count. In the end, she swallowed her feelings and forced herself to stay quiet.

After a couple of seconds, she finally managed, “No, it’s nothing. I just heard from Mr. Adams that you’re swamped in Cabinda, dealing with some tricky stuff. Figured you wouldn’t have time for distractions, so I didn’t want to bother you.”

She didn’t realize how transparent her lie was, written all over her face.

Dennis Williams stared at her for several long moments before calling her out. “Camila, you know you’re a terrible liar, right? I’m not buying that excuse.”

Camila’s cheeks flushed. She couldn’t meet his eyes.

She’d totally forgotten how sharp he could be, how easily he saw through people. Any little slip-up, and she was totally exposed in front of him.

Regret was pointless now. Dennis stepped closer, and Camila could smell that cool, faint scent he always carried.

His voice dropped low. “Camila, if something’s on your mind, you can tell me.”

He was inviting her to trust him.

But Camila was too scared.

She just couldn’t do it.

She was terrified that if she kept this up, he’d see right through her. So she forced a smile and said lightly, “I just… I just never know what you’re busy with. I don’t even know what to talk about half the time.

I mean, your stuff in Harrisburg, I get. Your work at the base, I’ve heard about. But in Cabinda? I literally have no clue. I don’t know if things are good or bad, and I’m just scared I’ll say something stupid and tick you off.”

Dennis looked surprised at that, and for a second, he actually seemed to believe her.

It was true—he’d always kept his business in Cabinda separate from his life here. He’d never told her much, so it made sense she’d feel uncertain.

He grew serious. “If you want to know, just ask. I’ll tell you anything. There’s nothing I can’t share with you.”

The way he said it made something thump hard in Camila’s chest.

She was just starting to make sense of that feeling when, suddenly, there was a loud thunk inside the car.

A split second later, she saw the passenger door fly open on the other side.

Sarah Brown tumbled out, practically dove for the curb, and started puking her guts out.

Sarah had finally finished throwing up. Aaron handed her a bottle of water and some tissues, fussing nervously.

Camila knelt down, worry plain in her voice. “Sarah, are you okay?”

Sarah turned to her, practically dumping everything she was holding into Aaron’s arms and pouting, “Camila, I just want to go to bed.”

Camila couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, alright, I’m taking you home.”

She took Sarah from Aaron, nodding gratefully. “Thanks for your help.”

Aaron stammered, “No problem, really, no problem at all.”

Sarah leaned her full weight on Camila, nearly knocking her over.

Before she could topple, someone steadied her from behind.

“Careful,” Dennis said quietly.

Camila realized her back was pressed tightly to his chest.

He gently held her shoulders, glanced at the barely-conscious Sarah, and said, “Let Aaron handle her. You just stay close and keep an eye on things.”

His words were calm, but his gaze lingered on her, making Camila’s heart skip all over again.
