Walter Wilson was caught off guard by the comment. He opened his mouth to explain, but before he could get a word out, his mom chuckled and waved her hand dismissively. “Oh, come on now, don’t get ahead of yourselves. My son? Landing a girl like Camila? Psh, he should be so lucky!”
She shot Walter a mock-annoyed look, as if she just couldn’t believe how hopeless her son was. “Camila is amazing, everyone knows it. She’s got guys lining up for her! With what Walter’s got going for him, he’d need a miracle to win her over.”
The way she said it, you’d think Walter was the last kid picked for dodgeball. That classic ‘tough love’ mom expression was written all over her face.
You know what they say: ‘the early bird gets the worm.’ Walter and Camila worked together, saw each other nearly every day, and yet after all this time? Not a single spark. Honestly, it was embarrassing—she could barely stand to take him out in public.
Walter just sighed, totally exasperated by his mom’s roasting. The ladies around them burst out laughing.
“Oh, really? Well, you’d better step up your game, Walter!” one of the women teased.
“Yeah, go on, don’t let her slip away! You want that fairytale ending, don’t you?” another chimed in, raising her glass of Chardonnay.
Camila’s cheeks burned with embarrassment. She and Walter were just friends, nothing more, but these ladies seemed determined to play matchmaker. Camila wondered if she’d ever be able to hang out with Walter again without feeling awkward.
Walter, noticing Camila’s discomfort, frowned and was about to say something when a sharp voice rang out from the entryway.
“Oh, Mrs. Wilson, give it a rest. Like Camila would ever go for your son!” The tone was dripping with sarcasm.
Everyone turned to see Barbara Jones strutting in, Sandra Taylor right behind her. Just Camila’s luck—she had to run into these two.
Walter and his mother immediately looked annoyed, their faces darkening with obvious distaste—especially Walter. He knew all too well how the Smith family had treated Camila in the past.
