Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 570

She stood up and slipped into the next room.

Lillian was there, her face blotchy with tears, being forced by the housekeeper into a frilly little party dress. She looked miserable and completely unwilling.

Daniel was there too.

He was dressed up in a tiny black suit, standing right next to Lillian and swaggering as he boasted, “After tonight, Dad Jordan is officially my dad. He doesn’t want you, or your mom. Honestly, nobody does! Me and my mom? We’re his favorites! And guess what, Mom says when I’m older, I’ll inherit the Smith family estate.”

He grinned, stretching his words. “I’ll be head of the Smith family! I’ll get to do whatever I want. Heck, maybe I’ll buy you and your mom to clean up after us, ha! Loser. Little loser…”

Lillian didn’t even want to look at him.

All she wanted right now was her mom. Or Sarah. Or Layla.

She had her own dad. Her dad would never abandon her and Mom. Daniel was just making things up!

She tried to block him out, but Daniel’s excited, cruel voice still made her flinch. She sniffled, fighting back more tears.

Just then, there was the sound of the door opening.

Daniel, always quick, instantly dropped the smug act. He smiled sweetly and, in his best good-boy voice, turned to Lillian: “Aw, Lillian, don’t cry! Tonight is Dad Jordan and my mom’s engagement party. After tonight, we’ll be family! I’ll be your big brother, and I’ll totally watch out for you. So don’t be sad, okay?”

Barbara Jones came in to check on her granddaughter. She was surprised to hear Daniel being so considerate.

Her mood instantly lifted.

She walked over, ruffled Daniel’s hair, and praised, “What a thoughtful boy you are, Daniel.”

Daniel beamed up at her and called out, “Grandma!”

Barbara nodded, treating him like her own grandson.

“So,” she asked, “how are you and Lillian getting along?”

Daniel put on his most angelic face. “I talked to Lillian a lot, but she just ignored me. It’s okay, though! I’ll keep her company.”

Barbara’s smile faded. Of course, it was Lillian’s fault.

She scowled, her tone sharp. “Lillian, your mother has raised you with no manners at all! You see your grandma and don’t even say hello?”
