Camila Davis didn’t look back at the chaos erupting in the ballroom behind her.
She knew that after tonight, the Smith family would never be the same. The scandal hanging over their heads would stick around for a long, long time.
But none of that mattered to her anymore.
Once she stepped outside the hotel, Camila finally felt like she could breathe again—the world was quiet at last.
Clutching her little girl in her arms, she turned to Sarah Brown and Walter Wilson. “I know I don’t have to say thank you—we’re not strangers—but seriously, you two saved my butt tonight. I really appreciate it.”
If it hadn’t been for them, Sandra Taylor would never have gotten what she deserved so fast. Even if Camila didn’t care about her own reputation, she still would’ve been dragged through the mud.
“Oh, don’t mention it. Helping out a friend is no big deal,” Walter replied, giving Camila a once-over. She looked completely unfazed by the whole drama, so he dropped it.
Sarah grinned. “Come on, Camila, you know I’d never let you and Lillian get treated like that. I’ve been waiting ages to see that woman’s true colors come out. Tonight was the night!”
She gave Walter a playful nudge. “And Mr. Wilson here, you were quick on your feet! How’d you even think to start recording?”
Sarah admitted she’d been too furious at the time to remember such a thing.
Walter just chuckled. “Call it a gut feeling. When Sandra Taylor walked in looking for trouble, I figured something shady was about to go down. So I whipped out my phone and started filming, just in case.”
Sarah beamed. “Smart thinking! That was so satisfying to watch—finally, Camila got the justice she deserves.”
Camila smiled too, but her curiosity got the better of her. “So, when did you manage to get those photos?”
Sarah shrugged. “Been working on it for a while. Jordan’s in Europe, so he could dig up the dirt more easily. No luck for a bit, but I guess karma finally stepped in. This morning, when they took Lillian away and we chased them to the hotel, Jordan messaged me the proof. They were trying to stop us from going upstairs, remember? While you were getting Lillian, I slipped away and paid off the guy in charge of the slideshow. The rest is history.”
She smirked. “Honestly, I could’ve shown worse, but I decided to spare her some dignity.”
Camila listened, suddenly feeling a wave of gratitude. She knew Sarah had done all this just to stick up for her. After months under suspicion, tonight finally cleared her name.
Unable to hold back, Camila hugged Sarah tight. “Sarah, thank you. Really.”
Sarah laughed, brushing it off. “Don’t get all mushy on me! Anyway, it’s getting late. Lillian still has to hand out her farewell gifts at school. The party’s already running behind.”
“Right, let’s go,” Camila agreed.
On the way, she texted Dennis Williams to let him know they were safe.
Seeing his message felt like a lifeline. Instead of texting back, she hit the video call button.
Dennis answered right away. He expected to see Camila, but the camera opened on a tearful little Lillian instead.
His heart skipped a beat. “Oh no, what happened? Why is Lillian crying?”
Lillian looked at him through the screen, lips trembling, tears slipping down her cheeks. “Daddy, I’m gonna miss my friends so much. I won’t get to see them anymore…”
Dennis’s voice softened. “Oh, sweetheart, don’t cry. Hey, look at it this way—now you’ll get to see your old dad more often! Isn’t that something to be happy about? Do you miss me?”
He gently tried to steer her thoughts in another direction.
Lillian sniffled, wiped her nose, and nodded. “Yeah, I miss you a lot, Daddy.”
“Then let’s not be sad, okay? Once you and Mommy come to Cabinda, we’ll do all sorts of fun stuff. How about a trip to the amusement park? You can eat as much ice cream as you want.”
Lillian hesitated, but a tiny smile peeked through the tears. Camila shot Dennis a grateful look on the screen, and for the first time all day, she felt like everything might just turn out okay.
