Since I had a bit of downtime, I figured I’d give Sarah Brown a call and check in on how things were going on her end.
Sarah had gone over to The Smith Group today to start her onboarding. She hadn’t officially taken over yet—just did a walk-through of the place.
“I’m not actually starting for a couple more days,” she said. “I need a little time to settle in.”
I mean, it’s her family’s company. Her brother knows how she is—no one’s going to rush her once she’s there.
Then Sarah turned the tables on me: “So, Camila, how was your first day? Did anyone give you a hard time?”
I laughed. “Are you kidding? With my mentor around, who would dare? Everything went super smoothly. Actually, I had lunch at his place today. What about you? Wanna join us?”
“Nah, you two finally get to hang out, I won’t crash your lunch. But maybe tonight…” Sarah paused, then teased, “Wait, aren’t you meeting up with Mr. Williams tonight?”
I remembered Dennis had mentioned being busy yesterday, so I said, “Not sure if he’s free.”
“Oh, really now?” Sarah teased, “You just called him your Mr. Williams and didn’t even deny it! Come on, spill: did anything happen between you two last night?”
I hesitated, not wanting to hide anything from her. After a few seconds, I said, “…I guess you could say that?”
Sarah sounded confused. “‘You guess’? What does that mean? You two were obviously vibing, the mood was right—weren’t there fireworks, a big confession, and then, you know, all that?”
My face felt like it was on fire. “Jeez, Sarah! Don’t exaggerate—we’re not at that stage!”
She finally stopped laughing and asked, “So what did happen?”
Knowing she’d never let it go otherwise, I gave her the rundown of what went down last night.
Sarah was stunned. “Wait, that’s it? A hug? No confession, not even a kiss? Camila, how is that progress?”
