Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 601

Dennis Williams had always been a man of action.

Once he made up his mind, there was no hesitation—he’d just packed up and whisked her away to Cabinda, no questions asked.

But maybe because he’d spent so much time alone, he overlooked one tiny detail: he’d never actually said out loud what they were to each other.

Now, standing in front of her, Dennis was all sincerity, his heart on his sleeve, waiting for her answer.

Camila Davis looked at the man before her. The anxiety rattling inside her finally settled. She hadn’t misread things—this wasn’t some hopeless crush or a leap into the void.

He liked her, too.

Even though she’d sensed it, it still felt unreal, like something out of a dream. How lucky could she be? Out of everyone, he’d chosen her.

Dennis was the kind of man who seemed untouchable, like someone straight out of a legend or a fairytale—charming, reserved, and just a little out of reach. When she’d first met him, he’d felt as distant as the stars.

She used to wonder who, if anyone, could ever bring him back down to earth.

Never in a million years did she think that person would be her.

After all, what did she have to offer? No fancy family, no picture-perfect resume. She was divorced, raising a kid on her own. Compared to others, she felt like she hardly measured up.

So when Dennis finally asked what she wanted, Camila hesitated.

Could she really do this? Be with someone like him?

Dennis seemed to sense her uncertainty, but instead of pushing, he just waited patiently, his eyes gentle and steady.

Thankfully, she didn’t keep him waiting long. After a few moments of quiet, Camila finally spoke.

“Dennis, you know about my past. I’ve been through a lot—some things I’d rather forget. I took a chance once, thought I’d found love, and ended up crashing and burning. That relationship ended badly, and honestly, it scared me. I don’t want to get hurt again. But you can’t always control your heart, can you? Back in Harrisburg, I tried to keep my distance, but I just… couldn’t. Then I realized—I want to try. Since meeting you, it’s like a lucky charm followed me around. Things started looking up. You make me feel like maybe I’m not as hopeless as I thought. I want to trust you, and I hope… I hope this works out for us.”

Saying all that took every ounce of courage Camila had. She was more nervous than she’d ever been, watching his face for any sign.

She’d never looked more beautiful.

His dark eyes were like the ocean after midnight—deep, mysterious, and impossible to escape. Camila felt herself getting lost in them, her thoughts drifting.

Before she knew it, he’d pulled her into his arms, holding her close.

He smelled like fresh pine and soap, that comforting, masculine scent that made her heart race. Camila’s lashes fluttered, her breath caught, and she felt as shy and unsteady as a teenager at her first prom.

She was his, and he could see the hope and innocence shining in her eyes.

Dennis had always thought of himself as calm and in control, but in that moment, he realized he’d been wrong. There was something wild inside him, something he could barely hold back.

Maybe it was fate, or just the magic of the moment, but he found himself leaning in, pressing a gentle kiss to Camila’s lips.

It started soft, just a brush of warmth, but quickly deepened—slow and sweet, then hungry with all the feelings they’d both kept hidden for so long.
