Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 618

Cynthia Lee was struggling to keep her composure.

She could feel the eyes of everyone around her—full of mocking amusement, she was sure of it. No one here was rooting for her, except maybe Sarah Brown.

Sarah, on the other hand, looked absolutely thrilled. She nudged her best friend and whispered, “Camila and Dennis together? That’s like, peanut butter and jelly! Total match made in heaven.”

Aurora Robinson, standing nearby, was so surprised she tugged Sarah’s sleeve. “Wait, your friend really is with Mr. Williams? For real?”

Sarah grinned from ear to ear. “Did you not see them hugging? Of course it’s real! They’ve been dating for a while. Aren’t they just perfect together?”

Aurora blinked, still trying to process it, but she couldn’t help smiling too. “Yeah, they really do look good together.”

It was true. Camila and Dennis—both stunning and charismatic—were a picture-perfect couple.

And honestly, Aurora didn’t see anything wrong with Camila’s reputation. Camila had graduated from Harvard Med, was running a major hospital now—hardly someone to look down on. Even if she’d been divorced, so what? Not everyone had the right to judge her.

Besides, Aurora knew from stories she’d heard from people overseas—Dennis’s friends, especially Lillian and her crew—how much respect Dennis had for Camila. He treated her like she was irreplaceable.

Unlike the other “Cabinda girls”—the country club set, born and bred on brunches and a certain sense of entitlement—Aurora wasn’t about to look down on Camila. Honestly, those girls were always just a little too smug, as if the world owed them something.

Now, with everything out in the open, Aurora glanced around and noticed the shifting, uneasy faces of the crowd. They’d all heard what happened: Jonathan Allen humiliating Camila earlier in the evening. And it was clear this wasn’t going to just blow over.

Jonathan, who’d never been the sharpest tool in the shed, rolled across the floor in a mess of expensive suit and panic. He didn’t care about his dignity anymore. He was terrified.

He’d heard about Dennis Williams’s reputation before. The man never raised his voice or got physical—he didn’t have to. Once, someone had insulted Dennis’s late mother, and Dennis hadn’t even reacted. But the next day, that guy’s entire life had unraveled: criminal charges, family ruined, wife gone, and eventually, the guy died in prison. All without Dennis ever lifting a finger.

Jonathan wasn’t stupid. He knew Dennis’s power was absolute. And now, as he pictured his own life going down that same drain, he broke out in a cold sweat.

No way. He wasn’t going to prison. He was too young to die.

Jonathan scrambled to his knees in front of Dennis and started begging. “M-Mr. Williams, I’m so sorry! I had no idea who Ms. Davis really was. If I’d known, I never would’ve dared. Please, I’m begging you—don’t ruin me. Ms. Davis, please accept my apology! I’ll never do anything like this again, I swear. Please, forgive me! I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!”
