Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 620

Even Dennis Williams’ right-hand man was saying stuff like this—Jonathan Allen realized he wasn’t getting out of tonight’s mess. Not even a little bit.

Just as he was about to steel himself and go for another round, Larry Adams chimed in, “If you think it’s too much trouble, I can find someone to do it for you.”

Jonathan’s jaw clenched.

If someone else did it, he’d be lucky to walk away in one piece.

Everyone knew the folks around Mr. Williams had been through hell and come out the other side. If one of them took a swing at him, he’d probably lose half his teeth.

No way Jonathan was letting that happen. Gritting his teeth, he snapped, “No need. I’ll do it myself!”

He steeled himself and smacked his own cheek—hard.

SMACK.

This one was way louder than the last. Five angry red fingers instantly bloomed on his cheek.

Jonathan’s face went numb.

“Now that’s more like it. At least you’re showing some sincerity,” Larry nodded, motioning for him to keep going.

Jonathan was boiling inside, but he didn’t dare stop or go easy on himself.

The sound of slap after slap echoed through the room. Everyone could see—Jonathan wasn’t holding back.

His face, never much to look at, was swelling up fast—red, puffy, and pitiful.

Dennis Williams just watched, cold-eyed, saying nothing, not telling him to stop.

No one knew how long it went on. Blood started to trickle from the corner of Jonathan’s mouth, his head spinning, knees shaking. He nearly collapsed before Dennis finally turned to Camila Davis, his voice unusually soft: “You tired? Want me to take you home?”

Camila had been dying to leave.

But she shot a glance at Sarah Brown, waiting for her cue.

Sarah grinned. “Yeah, we can go. I’m ready.”

Camila nodded and turned to Dennis, “Let’s get out of here, then.”

“Alright.”

Dennis took her hand, leading her toward the exit.

As they passed Jonathan, Dennis paused, turning his gaze on him. “You said something wrong tonight, Jonathan. Camila doesn’t need to fish for a rich guy. She has me—and I’m the one who chased her, got it?”

Jonathan nodded so hard it looked like his head might fall off.

Regret gnawed at him. If he’d known this woman was with Dennis Williams, not for a million bucks would he have tried to mess with her.

She reached over and gave Larry a hearty slap on the back. “And you, Larry, that was badass. That jerk totally deserved it!”

Larry just smiled at her antics. “Guys like that—bullies—aren’t so tough when the tables turn.”

Aurora grinned at Camila. “I gotta say, Camila, you were brave standing up to Jonathan Allen back there. Guess it helps having such a strong backup, huh?”

She winked at Dennis. “Mr. Williams, you’re a lucky guy—found yourself a real gem.”

Dennis nodded politely. “I couldn’t agree more, Ms. Robinson.”

Sarah rolled her eyes. “Alright, alright, enough with the mushy stuff! Have a heart for us single folks. Go on, Dennis, take Camila home. I know you two have a lot to catch up on after your business trip. We’ll leave you to it.”

Camila gave her a look. “And you?”

Sarah grinned. “Don’t worry about me! I finally got to see Mr. Adams—gonna drag him out for a drink. What do you say, Larry? You up for a pint?”

Larry chuckled. “Absolutely.”

Aurora piped in, “Count me in too—nothing waiting for me at home but reruns and microwave dinners.”

“Perfect!”

And just like that, their plans were set.
