When Camila Davis saw how motivated and hardworking her kiddo was, she couldn’t help but smile. “Alright then, let’s sign up for the contest!”
She quickly texted Lawrence Walker back with their decision.
Lawrence was thrilled when he got her message. He immediately shared the details about the contest theme and the rules.
“Just remember, once you sign up, you’ll need to have your piece finished by the middle of next month.”
“Got it,” Camila replied, and then filled Lillian in on everything.
As they wrapped up the conversation, Lawrence sent another message: “By the way, I have a small favor to ask.”
Camila was a bit surprised. What could a legendary artist like Lawrence possibly need from her?
She typed back, “Of course, what is it?”
Lawrence didn’t beat around the bush. “I’m organizing an art exhibit soon, and I was wondering if Lillian would be willing to lend her award-winning piece for the show.”
Oh, so that was it.
Camila had no objections. “Absolutely, that would be wonderful.”
After all, considering how young Lillian was, she’d never have such a chance if it weren’t for someone like Mr. Walker. Getting a piece into a real art show at her age? Unbelievable.
Camila was genuinely grateful and told him so. “Thank you so much, Mr. Walker. We really appreciate your support—and thanks for letting us know about the competition.”
Lawrence replied warmly, “No need to thank me! Lillian is truly gifted, especially with Mr. Williams as her mentor. She has a bright future ahead, no doubt about it.
And honestly, her winning piece is more than qualified for a show like this. You have no idea—some of the old-timers at the Art Society are still kicking themselves for missing out on such a talented student...”
Camila ended the chat in a great mood.
She put her phone down and shared the news with Dennis Williams and Lillian.
Dennis nodded, then asked, “Did Mr. Walker mention the date for the exhibition? This is Lillian’s first show—we definitely have to be there.”
“Yeah, he did. It’s at the beginning of next month,” Camila answered, though she was already a bit worried about her own schedule. She really wanted to be there for Lillian’s big moments.
Lillian, curious as ever, piped up, “Will there be lots of people coming to see my painting?”
Dennis smiled. “Absolutely. Only recognized works get into these shows, Lillian. You should be proud.”
Lillian beamed, her voice sugary sweet. “That’s only because Daddy’s such a great teacher! Daddy’s the best!”
Several teams were assigned, and Camila had two team members: a guy and a girl, who happened to be old college friends.
The guy, Benjamin Torres, and the girl, Harper Thompson, both came from the same university and had studied under the same professor.
Coincidentally, Camila had attended their university too, though they’d graduated several years before her—making them her seniors.
Back when she was still a student, Camila used to hear stories about them. On campus, they were known as the “golden duo” of the medical school.
Now, meeting them in person as their team leader, Camila couldn’t help but satisfy her curiosity after the introductions. “You know, I always heard this rumor that you and Harper were a couple?”
She expected them to laugh and confirm it, but Benjamin shook his head. “Nah, we’re just old friends from the same lab, that’s all.”
Harper, who’d looked ready to say something, pressed her lips together and looked a bit disappointed.
She glanced at Benjamin. They’d known each other for years, and she’d always liked him. But he’d never seen her that way.
Now, seeing Benjamin seem interested in Camila, Harper couldn’t help but feel a flash of jealousy.
Oblivious, Benjamin grinned at Camila. “I’ve heard a lot about you, Camila… Hope you don’t mind me using your first name?”
