Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 658

How long has it been since you let them get back to work?

“Every month they’re lounging around at home, getting paid for doing nothing. They’re practically gathering dust, and I’ve never seen you do a thing about it.”

Old Mr. Williams glared, his face souring as Dennis called him out, and his cane thumped irritably against the floor.

“You little punk! If you don’t want to keep your old grandpa company, just say so. What’s the point of bringing that up?”

Dennis let out a short laugh. “Just saying, Grandpa—if you really want to stay healthy, a little stroll around the block isn’t gonna cut it. You’ve got to put in some real work.”

Mr. Williams nearly spluttered with indignation.

He was in his seventies, for crying out loud! Trying all that fitness stuff Dennis pushed on him left him breathless and sore in no time. After a couple of attempts, he’d started avoiding it altogether.

Tonight, he’d finally felt like just taking a walk—only for Dennis to shoot him down, leaving him in no mood even for that.

He huffed his way back from the foyer and barked, “Come play chess with me!”

Dennis just arched an eyebrow, then stood up with a shrug. “Sure, why not?”

It wasn’t his first time playing with his grandpa.

Unsurprisingly, Dennis wiped the board with him, leaving no room for a comeback.

Old Mr. Williams looked crushed.

Dennis played with ruthless efficiency, never giving him a chance. He started to suspect this sly grandson of his was getting back at him for nagging.

Dennis, meanwhile, looked as relaxed as ever, lazily twirling the chess pieces between his long fingers, giving off the air of a king controlling the battlefield.

Cynthia Lee couldn’t take her eyes off him. Now that’s the kind of man who could match her—charming, composed, always in control.

She watched him with obvious admiration, though Dennis didn’t even spare her a glance.

He seemed more interested in his phone, checking it between moves.

Not a single reply from Camila Davis all night.

He couldn’t help but wonder—her lab was supposed to be empty by now, what could she possibly be working on so late, all by herself?

With his mind clearly elsewhere, Dennis sped up his moves and even let his grandpa win a round.

That perked Mr. Williams right up. He thought his chess skills had finally improved, and was about to challenge Dennis again.

But Dennis stood, smooth and decisive. “That’s it for tonight. I’ve got some stuff to take care of—I’m heading out.”

Cynthia’s face froze, her expression darkening instantly.

Mr. Williams looked just as stunned.

Dennis didn’t seem the least bit guilty. He just said tiredly, “See, this is why I don’t like answering all your questions. I’ll come visit when I’m less busy. Get some rest, Grandpa.”

With that, Dennis strode out, long legs carrying him swiftly from the Williams estate.

Mr. Williams was left fuming.

Hadn’t he heard Dennis and his girlfriend had broken up? Was the rumor mill lying to him?

Cynthia’s nails dug painfully into her palm. She forced herself to stay cool—she would win in the end, she just had to keep her composure.

Dennis, meanwhile, couldn’t care less what the two of them thought. He drove straight to Camila Davis’s lab.

When he arrived, the building was nearly deserted, just a few lights glowing inside.

Dennis entered the security code and slipped quietly through the front door.

Inside, Camila was hunched over her workstation, carefully purifying some chemicals—probably for another one of her experiments, completely absorbed in her work…
