Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 690

Compared to her parents’ bashful awkwardness, Audrey Williams was far bolder.

Without a hint of shame, she pulled out her phone and snapped several photos of the sweet couple in front of her, making sure to capture every adorable angle. Satisfied, she tapped save and tucked her phone away.

Dennis Williams arched a brow at her, then shot her a look that said, “Get moving! Don’t make trouble here!”

Audrey caught his meaning instantly. Flashing him an “OK” sign with her hand, she hopped to her feet and turned to her parents. “Let’s go find Grandpa,” she announced cheerfully, linking arms with them as they made their way back to the banquet hall.

Once they’d left the garden behind, Douglas Williams leaned down to ask his daughter, “So, did you get the shots? Any good ones?”

Audrey grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Of course I did! Both Jordan and Camila are so photogenic—every picture came out perfectly. I took a bunch, actually. I’m planning to sell them to Jordan for a high price and make myself some spending money!”

Charlotte Kelly couldn’t help but laugh at her daughter’s scheming. “You little rascal…”

The three of them chatted and laughed as they returned to the entrance of the banquet hall.

Just as they were about to go inside, they ran into Cynthia Lee.

Spotting them, Cynthia’s face lit up with a gentle, practiced smile. She approached, greeting them warmly, “Charlotte, I was just about to go looking for you. You’d been gone a while—everything all right?”

The three exchanged a quick glance, tacitly dropping any mention of Dennis.

Charlotte offered her a polite nod. “Nothing serious—just took Audrey to get her medicine. That’s why we were held up.”

At that, Cynthia’s expression shifted to one of concern. “Are you not feeling well, Audrey? Are you all right?”

Audrey replied with a cheerful smile, “I’m fine, Nancy. No need to worry. Did we keep you waiting long? Let’s go back in.”

“Of course.”

Douglas and Charlotte nodded, preparing to head inside.

But Cynthia glanced behind them, puzzled. “Wait—where’s Dennis? Didn’t he come back with you?”

Charlotte answered smoothly, “He ran into an old acquaintance. He’ll be back soon.”

Audrey took Cynthia’s arm, gently preventing her from heading outside. “No need to wait for him, Nancy. Come on, I want to chat with you.”

He thought back to the airport earlier that day, when Audrey had come racing toward them, full of energy. Dennis could only shake his head in resignation.

Camila laughed softly. Now that she understood a bit more about Audrey’s health, she offered, “Don’t worry. I’ll look into her case and see if I can come up with a better treatment plan.”

She glanced at her watch. “There are still a lot of guests inside. You probably can’t stay out here much longer, can you?”

Dennis nodded. “You’re right. What about you? How are you getting home?”

Without hesitation, Camila replied, “Walter Wilson’s giving me a ride. He drove me here earlier.”

At the mention of Walter’s name, Dennis’s eyes darkened slightly. “Let me have our driver take you instead,” he suggested. “You all just finished dinner, and I’m sure there was wine. No need to trouble Mr. Wilson. Besides, he only just got in today—he should rest after such a long day.”

Camila considered this and found his reasoning perfectly sound. Walter and the others had been helping her at the lab nonstop since their flight landed—it really wasn’t fair to ask him to do more.

She nodded, smiling. “All right, I’ll do as you say.”

And, of course, she had no intention of turning down her boyfriend’s thoughtful gesture.
