Harper Thompson’s temper flared in an instant.
Just then, as the argument between the two was heating up, Camila Davis returned from submitting her documents.
The research institute had been in lockdown mode for nearly a month, everyone working around the clock. Now that Camila had completed her phase of the project successfully, management had rewarded her team with two well-deserved days off.
Camila was in high spirits. She couldn’t wait to get home and share the good news with Dennis Williams. After all, she’d barely had time for him—or for Lillian—these past several days.
She relayed the news to Benjamin Torres and Harper, offering a polite, “You two should take these next couple of days to get some proper rest, too.”
“Finally! I was starting to forget what a normal schedule feels like,” Benjamin said, looking genuinely relieved.
Harper, still fuming from moments before, barely reacted. She just muttered a flat “Oh.”
Camila didn’t take it personally. She knew Harper had always been critical of her, but at least she was professional enough not to let it interfere with her work. Camila had long since learned to ignore the woman’s icy remarks.
With the announcement made, Camila was ready to head out when Benjamin called after her. “Hey, Camila—wait up.”
She turned, and he handed her an envelope. “This is for you.”
Camila eyed the invitation, puzzled. “What’s this?”
Benjamin explained: it was an invitation to a medical symposium—a prestigious event attended by renowned doctors and high-profile guests seeking private consultations. Among them would be politicians, business magnates, and aristocrats from all over.
Camila grasped the significance immediately. It was a rare mix of charity and opportunity—a chance to expand professional networks and perhaps even land a private position with a wealthy family. The financial prospects alone would be life-changing.
She wasn’t particularly interested in the social climbing aspect—until Benjamin added, “There’s also a medical challenge at the symposium. Basically, someone will present a case study, and participants will be asked to diagnose and propose a treatment plan, including any prescriptions. Most importantly, some of the old medical families will be there.”
Benjamin looked surprised but couldn’t argue with her logic. His offer had been personal, but Camila was gracious, refusing to take on any unnecessary obligations.
She smiled at him. “Thank you, I really appreciate it, but you should hold onto it for someone else who might need the chance. It’s getting late—I’d better get going.”
Benjamin could only nod. “Alright. Just promise you’ll come. Maybe we’ll get a chance to put our skills to the test.”
Camila agreed and said her goodbyes.
As she stepped out of the research institute, she immediately spotted someone waiting for her on the sidewalk by the entrance.
Beneath the glow of the moon, the man stood with an air of quiet elegance, his eyes gentle, touched by silver light. Camila couldn’t help but break into a joyful smile as she jogged toward him.
She wrapped him in a warm hug, laughing, “How did you know I’d be finishing up tonight?”
