“Harper Thompson, what exactly did Lavinia Roberts promise you? Why are you so eager to be her lapdog and do her bidding?”
“If you’d bothered to get your facts straight, you’d know it was Lavinia who stole from me first, and then tried to hit me. She thought she could get away with it just because she knows a bit of self-defense. My boyfriend only stepped in to protect me. Whatever happened to her after, she brought it on herself. It’s got nothing to do with me.”
Harper bristled, her tone self-righteous. “Ms. Roberts might be a little hot-tempered, but it was just a minor spat—she wasn’t actually going to hurt you. But you! You went too far. You’ve ruined her hand! Do you have any idea what that means? She’s the next in line for the Roberts family—she was supposed to use those hands to help people, to heal. What you did is basically destroying her future! And you call yourself a doctor? Where’s your compassion? You’re not fit to set foot in the research institute! Now, you’re going to apologize to Ms. Roberts, right now, or I swear I’ll never work with you again!”
Camila Davis let out a soft laugh, utterly unbothered. “Suit yourself, Harper. But let me make one thing clear: this isn’t the place for your petty grudges. If you delay our work and we fall behind schedule, you can be the one to explain it to the higher-ups.”
With that, Camila turned and walked away, clearly done wasting her breath.
But Harper’s anger boiled over. She grabbed Camila’s arm, yanking her back. “Don’t you walk away from me!”
Caught off guard, Camila nearly stumbled, barely catching herself on the edge of a desk. Pain shot through her arm where Harper had grabbed her.
Her patience snapped. She shook off Harper’s hand, glaring. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Harper stood her ground, refusing to back down. “I’m not giving you a choice, Camila. The Roberts family isn’t someone you want as an enemy! And don’t forget the Welches, either. You ruined their engagement—if they wanted to crush you, it’d be as easy as squashing an ant!”
Camila couldn’t hide her surprise. She knew perfectly well the Welches had called off the engagement only because they were afraid of Dennis Williams. Did Harper really not know? So what was behind this crusade to defend Lavinia?
She let out a disbelieving laugh. “And if the Roberts family elders are really going to hold a grudge just because Lavinia threw a tantrum, then what does that say about them? Are they all as petty as she is?”
Camila turned to Benjamin, her tone softer. “Look, I don’t know all the details about your family and the Roberts, but I do know you’re more than capable, Benjamin. Relying on someone else’s charity is never a long-term solution. If you want real influence, you have to stand on your own.”
If the Roberts family were truly admirable, that would be one thing. But from what Camila had seen, any family that could raise someone like Lavinia was rotten at the core. If the Torres family didn’t find their own path, sooner or later they’d either be abandoned or dragged down.
Benjamin understood her point instantly. He opened his mouth to say something, but Harper cut him off with a shrill, “Enough! Who do you think you are, Camila? You wouldn’t be where you are today if the medical school hadn’t backed you up!”
She turned to Benjamin, her voice pleading. “Benjamin, don’t listen to her. She just doesn’t want to see you succeed! Everything I’m doing is for your own good. I know what your goals are!”
