Precisely because their abilities were well known, the higher-ups always assigned them the most critical projects.
The expectations were sky-high—not just in terms of quality, but also speed.
Camila Davis’s team was scheduled to submit their section of the research first thing the next morning. According to her plans, everything should have been organized and ready by tonight.
But now, out of nowhere, the data wasn’t adding up.
It was a devastating problem.
Luckily, since they hadn’t submitted anything yet, there was still a chance to fix it. If the documents went up as they were and the higher-ups caught the mistakes, it would be Camila, as team leader, who’d take the fall.
Harper Thompson had been in this field for years, but never before had she been so mercilessly reprimanded.
Combined with what had happened that morning, her resentment toward Camila Davis had reached a boiling point.
She was convinced Camila was targeting her on purpose, just looking for a reason to make her look bad.
“My data is fine,” Harper insisted, her tone defensive. “I checked it three times before I sent it over.”
Camila’s patience snapped. “This is what you call checking three times? Look at this page!”
She jabbed a finger at three glaring errors, her voice tight with frustration, though she managed not to explode.
Benjamin Torres, watching from the side, frowned as he scanned the numbers. “Harper, did you miss something? There’s definitely an issue here.”
Harper wanted to argue, but the facts were undeniable.
Camila didn’t waste another word. She tossed the file back to Harper, her tone leaving no room for debate. “Take this and fix it.”
Harper seethed, gritting her teeth. Who did Camila think she was, anyway? So she was team leader—big deal. Did she really think that made her some kind of boss?
But Harper knew better than to start a fight in front of everyone, so however much she resented it, she took the file and trudged back to her desk to redo the work.
Camila, strict as she was, didn’t just leave Harper to flounder. That evening, she stayed late, helping Harper comb through the data line by line.
No matter what, the team was in this together.
Even if it meant working overtime, they had to get it right. Otherwise, everyone’s hard work would be wasted.
But none of this made a difference to Harper. She didn’t appreciate Camila’s effort at all.
After work, still fuming, Harper called Lavinia Roberts and immediately started venting about Camila.
But to her dismay, the family who’d always indulged her told her to swallow her pride this time. “What do you expect? The other side is Mr. Williams,” they said.
The injustice was enough to drive her mad.
She was the last person to simply let things go.
The constant pain in her injured hand was a reminder of her humiliation every single day.
After stewing on it for a long time, she suddenly remembered Harper Thompson, who also worked at the research institute.
She immediately reached out, hoping to use Harper as a tool to make Camila’s life difficult.
But now, it was clear Harper was useless—she couldn’t even stand up for herself, let alone take Camila down. Yet she still had the nerve to come crying to her!
Lavinia cursed Harper inwardly, but outwardly, she put on a gentle, sympathetic voice.
“Harper, thank you for standing up for me. Camila Davis really is too much. Someone like her doesn’t deserve her position at all. Honestly, with your experience—and Benjamin’s—you both have seniority over her. You should be team leader, not her.
But Camila just used her connections to snatch that spot for herself. It’s so unfair to you…
Maybe this is your chance to bring her down, don’t you think?”
