Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 738

The more Camila Davis thought about it, the angrier she became.

“There’s no need to let someone like that get under your skin,” Dennis Williams said gently, holding her close in a calming embrace. “Some people are determined to ruin their own lives, no matter what you do. If she causes trouble again, you don’t need to put up with it. Just report her to management and request a new team member. I’m sure they’ll understand.”

Camila nodded, realizing he was right. Why should she let that woman’s bad attitude ruin her day? Harper Thompson was always looking for drama and clearly didn’t care about her own career. So why should Camila waste her energy worrying about someone like that?

Dennis brushed a gentle kiss over her lips. “Let’s not talk about anyone else tonight. We don’t get to see each other often enough as it is. I have something for you.”

“Oh? What is it?” Camila’s curiosity was instantly piqued.

Dennis reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. When he opened it, she caught a glimpse of a beautiful bracelet. He carefully took out the piece and slipped it onto her wrist, the cool touch of the beads sending a small shiver up her arm. Camila watched as he fastened the clasp.

The bracelet was exquisite, a unique blend of polished wood and deep onyx beads. The quality was obvious—only the finest materials had been used.

“It’s gorgeous,” she breathed, her eyes shining. “But why the sudden gift?”

Dennis traced his fingers lightly over her wrist. “Because it’s more than just a pretty accessory—it’s useful.”

He explained that at first glance, the bracelet was just an ordinary piece of jewelry. But hidden inside was a clever mechanism. If she pressed a disguised switch, one of the beads would pop open to reveal a tiny compartment filled with powdered medication.

Camila gasped in surprise, then quickly caught on. Delighted, she asked, “You had this made just for me? To help me protect myself?”

She remembered how he’d told her to let him handle things last time—she hadn’t expected him to deliver on his promise so quickly.

Dennis nodded, smiling. “I drew up the design myself and had it rushed through production. It’s small and elegant, so it won’t get in your way at work. If I can’t be with you and you ever find yourself in danger, I want this to help keep you safe.”

Eager to try it out, Camila followed his instructions. It was easy to find the hidden switch, and with a gentle press, the bead popped open just as he’d described.

The moment she heard her mother’s voice, Lillian slid off the couch and hurried over, arms outstretched for a hug. Camila scooped her up, heart aching at the sight of her trembling lip.

Dennis looked at the little one in surprise. “What happened to Lillian?”

Lillian buried her face in her mother’s shoulder, not wanting to talk.

Just then, Susan came over and explained, “She had a nightmare and woke up crying. I’m not sure if something happened at school today, but she’s been out of sorts ever since she got home.”

Camila felt a surge of worry. Was her daughter being picked on at school? She sat down on the couch, keeping Lillian close, and asked gently, “Did something happen at school today, honey? Do you want to talk to Mommy about it?”

Lillian pressed her face deeper into Camila’s embrace, silent and withdrawn.

Seeing this, Dennis decided not to push her. Instead, he quietly called for the bodyguard who’d been assigned to keep an eye on Lillian from a distance.
