Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 753

“I had a feeling I’d find you here, Camila.”

Hearing her mentor’s familiar, reassuring voice, Camila Davis felt a sudden sting behind her eyes.

She turned and looked at her master, her first words an apology. “I’m sorry, Master. It feels like I’ve brought shame on you.”

Eric Morris let out a quiet sigh and gently led her into the living room, settling her onto the couch beside him.

His tone was patient and understanding. “I’ve already heard what happened. I just need you to tell me honestly: when the data went through your hands, are you certain there were no mistakes?”

Camila nodded earnestly. “Yes, I’m sure.”

Eric offered a slight nod. “Then you have nothing to be ashamed of. We’ll let the investigation run its course—I trust they’ll look at the facts fairly. But you should prepare yourself. If it wasn’t you, then the problem lies with one of your two teammates. In your opinion, who is it most likely to be?”

Camila didn’t hesitate. “Harper Thompson. But the thing is, the data never passed through her hands. That’s what I keep wondering—how did she pull it off?”

Eric didn’t look surprised. “She’s in your group, right? If she wanted to sabotage you, she’s had her chances. But tell me, what’s between the two of you? Some grudge? Has something big happened between you and Harper?”

Camila understood he was just trying to get the full picture, so she answered honestly. “There’s no real grudge between us. If anything, it’s all one-sided. She’s always been openly hostile to me.”

“How so?” Eric asked, puzzled.

That woman’s arrogance was legendary—she never let a slight go unpunished. Losing a hand, breaking off an engagement—Lavinia would never let that go quietly.

As these thoughts flooded in, Camila’s eyes grew cold and hard.

“Come on. Have lunch with me first,” Eric said gently. “Don’t dwell on it. The investigators will sort things out.”

He set a comforting hand on her shoulder and steered her toward the dining room. Camila obediently helped support him as they walked inside.

After lunch, neither of them returned to the institute. Camila was officially suspended—understandable. But why was her master staying away from the research center as well?
