Camila Davis finally understood, but she still couldn’t help asking, “If that’s the case, then why give me so many invitations? Wouldn’t one be enough?”
The stack was so thick, anyone passing by might think she was handing out flyers.
Jarvis Peters found it odd as well.
Normally, you’d get one invitation for the medical school, one for yourself—more than enough. So why so many?
What was the deal here?
He glanced down at the invitations, then at Walter Wilson.
It was almost as if they were worried Camila might not show up, so they’d sent a whole pile just in case.
Curious, Camila asked, “Who’s hosting this ball, anyway?”
Jarvis explained, “It’s an annual thing, but the host changes every year. Usually, one of the old families takes the lead; they rotate who organizes it. The point is to network, help the next generation build connections. Of course, plenty of young people use it as a chance to find a match.”
He paused, something coming to mind. “Actually, the reason the Roberts and Welch families arranged their engagement was because of last year’s ball. Lavinia Roberts and Mr. Smith from the Welch family hit it off, and since both families had similar standing and wanted to team up, the engagement was settled.”
Camila mulled this over. “So will Lavinia Roberts be there this year?”
Jarvis nodded. “Absolutely. She wouldn’t miss it.”
Camila caught on right away.
“I’m guessing this mountain of invitations was probably her idea.”
Jarvis’s eyes narrowed as he warned her, “If it’s Lavinia’s doing, you’d better be careful. She holds a grudge, Camila! After what you did to her in front of everyone—and ruining her engagement—she’s not going to let it go. There was once a girl from a mid-tier family who accidentally crossed her. Lavinia used the ball to humiliate her in public. She’s ruthless when she wants to be.”
Walter, who’d been listening quietly, finally spoke up. “So, where’s this ball taking place?”
But Walter cut in, “No, I think you have to go. You’re the head of the medical school now—you represent your family’s legacy. The school’s been in the shadows for too long. It’s time people remembered its name, so any random upstart doesn’t think they can walk all over you. And besides, you’re Dennis Williams’s girlfriend. I’m sure plenty of people are waiting to see if you’ll have the nerve to show up. Camila, my advice is to go. Those people are nothing but clowns—don’t let them scare you. And it’s not like you’ll be facing them alone! Lots of your friends will be invited too. Even if they’re not, at the very least, I’ll be there with you.”
He gave her a look of silent encouragement.
Camila felt a flicker of gratitude.
Jarvis nodded in agreement. “Walter’s right. We’ve got nothing to hide. If you want to go, I’ll go with you. The Roberts family doesn’t scare me—the Harris family can handle it! I’ll have your back, Camila. Besides, the Williams family will be invited too. If you show up, Mr. Williams will definitely be there. With your boyfriend around, who’d dare mess with you?”
As he spoke, Jarvis found himself actually looking forward to it.
Lavinia Roberts probably chose this venue thinking Dennis Williams wouldn’t dare stand up to her again—not like he did before.
If that’s what she believes, she’s going to be in for a rude awakening.
