“No way, is she really that kind of person?”
“I don’t buy it. She’s the one Mr. Williams personally acknowledged. There’s no way his judgment is that bad, is there?”
But as soon as someone tried to defend Camila, their voices were drowned out by a wave of ridicule.
“Oh, please. Her own colleagues called her out—are you saying they’re lying?”
“Seriously? I thought those rumors were just gossip. Turns out they’re true after all…”
“If you make a mistake, just admit it. We’re all adults here. Why play games?”
“Exactly. She’s supposed to be someone with a decent reputation. Isn’t she worried she’ll embarrass Mr. Williams?”
“Embarrass him? Please. Ever since she got with him, all the goodwill Mr. Williams built up over the years has gone right down the drain.”
The room was already full of people who didn’t care for Camila Davis, and now, with someone openly criticizing her, the disdain in their eyes only deepened. As if by tearing her down, they might finally drive a wedge between her and Dennis Williams.
Camila stayed composed, her expression unruffled despite the barrage of criticism. She simply regarded Harper Thompson with a calm gaze.
Harper’s eyes glittered with delight, barely able to contain her glee. Her expression seemed to say: See? No one believes you. Let’s see how you talk your way out of this now.
Camila couldn’t stand that smug attitude. A cold smile tugged at her lips. “Tell me, Harper—since when did you start making decisions for the institute? You do realize the investigation isn’t over, right? Until we get the official notice, nothing’s set in stone. Yet you’re so sure I’ll be fired. Funny, information even my supervisor can’t get, somehow you know it? Who’s the one with the real connections here?”
The moment Camila finished, a ripple of laughter swept through the crowd. After all, what she said was true. Lavinia Roberts was notorious among their social circle. For years, she’d thrown her weight around, acting like she owned the place. And after getting engaged to the Welch family last year, she’d only gotten worse—bullying anyone whose family wasn’t as powerful as hers.
No one really liked her. If it weren’t for her family ties to both the Welches and the Robertses, no one would give her the time of day.
Sarah Brown, who’d had enough of the Robertses’ attitude, chimed in with a sneer. “Some people are so nasty and cruel, always picking on others, no wonder they ended up dumped by the Welches. Now she’s bitter and barking like a stray mutt—how pathetic. Judging by her attitude, she’ll probably never realize just how detestable she really is. Honestly, the Welches dodged a bullet by breaking off that engagement.”
Being dumped by the Welch family was Lavinia’s sore spot. Now, for someone to mention the engagement in public, her face turned an ugly shade of red. It wasn’t just that the Welch engagement had been a hard-won prize for her family—it was personal. She’d liked Mr. Welch for ages before finally securing the engagement. But when things blew up, both the Welches and the man she loved started avoiding her like the plague.
Lavinia’s rage burned white-hot. She directed every ounce of it at Camila. In her mind, this woman was to blame for ruining her engagement—and she’d make sure Camila paid for it.
Dream on if you think you’ll ever end up with Dennis Williams!
