As soon as those words left her lips, Lavinia Roberts seemed to have fully convinced herself.
Yes, that’s exactly what she’d say!
Who was Dennis Williams, after all? Whoever he wanted to take down, he could do it as effortlessly as squashing an ant.
Twisting the truth was child’s play for a man like him.
As long as she adamantly insisted that the Roberts Family was being framed, perhaps there was still a sliver of hope.
Deluding herself with her own cleverness, Lavinia set about lobbying for support, starting with Jarvis Peters.
She looked at him with desperate, shining eyes. “Jarvis, we’ve known each other for years. Can you really stand by and watch the Roberts Family be destroyed?”
Then she turned to Mrs. Molly. “Mrs. Smith, when you were so unwell, the Roberts Family did everything we could to help. We may not have cured you, but we did so with nothing but sincerity, didn’t we? I’m begging you—please, don’t turn your backs on us now! The Roberts Family is innocent!”
Her heartfelt plea sounded almost convincing, as if she truly were the wronged party.
But Jarvis Peters just chuckled, unbothered. “You want to know why your family ended up like this, Lavinia? Isn’t it your own doing? If you hadn’t been so arrogant and scheming, would tonight have turned out this way? You brought this upon yourself.”
Mrs. Molly eyed Lavinia’s reddened eyes without a hint of sympathy. Her voice was calm as she exposed the truth: “Are you talking about how, before you’d even started to treat me, you tried to negotiate terms—demanding I take you on as a pupil before you’d even lift a finger?”
Mrs. Molly listened, and a flash of regret crossed her face. “You can take on a goddaughter? Why didn’t I think of that?”
Just then, Neville Parsons joined in, feigning shock. “Wait—so both of your illnesses were cured by Camila too?”
The three who had just been speaking turned to Neville in surprise.
They all stared at him. “Mr. Parsons, what are you saying? Don’t tell us… Camila helped you as well?”
Neville burst out laughing. “You bet she did! You know I’ve had that hearing problem for years—practically deaf…”
