Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 851

Dennis nodded. “Yes, anything. I always keep my promises.”

Lillian’s expression was conflicted. After a long moment, she finally whispered, “Then… can you be my daddy forever and always stay with Mommy?”

Hearing this, Dennis smiled warmly. “Of course. That was my plan all along. I would do that even if you didn’t ask.” He gently probed further. “Is there something you’re worried about, Lillian?”

The little girl lowered her gaze, her thick lashes fluttering as she twisted the corner of her bedsheet. She seemed to be wrestling with something.

Dennis waited patiently.

After another long silence, her voice was barely a whisper. “Am I not a good girl? I made Grandpa and Grandma get hurt, and I made Mommy sad. I let the bad people bully them. Was I wrong? Was it wrong for me… to pretend I forgot about the bad grandpa, the bad grandma, and the bad daddy?”

When Lillian was non-verbal, she wouldn’t have processed things this way. But now that she had recovered, her intellect was advanced for her age, and her emotional sensitivity was heightened. She understood the sacrifices her mother had made and the pain she had endured.

As long as the Smiths were out of sight, Lillian could live her days in peace. But their arrival that afternoon, and seeing her grandmother get hurt because of her, had shattered the child’s fragile peace.

Listening to his reassurance, Lillian still seemed anxious. Her small voice trembled with a hint of tears. “Then… can I stay with Daddy and Mommy forever and ever?”

Her biggest fear was being taken away by those people she disliked, to never see her parents again.
