Julian and Felicity emerged from the study to witness the scene.
Catherine stood with her hands on her hips, her brother Kevin beside her, the two of them looking down imperiously at Tiana, who was sitting on the floor.
"You little beggar! Where did you crawl out from, you stinky kid? What are you doing in our house? We're nobility here. Filthy outsiders aren't allowed. Are you one of the maid's children? Tell me, or I'll throw you in a garbage heap and fire your pathetic maid of a mother!" Catherine taunted, tossing her head.
Tiana, looking like a lost kitten on the floor, didn't cry. Instead, she stared defiantly at the two bigger, hostile children.
She was not a fool. In fact, she was very smart.
"You say this is your house? Do you know the address? Do you know what neighborhood this is?" Tiana asked from the floor, her voice a mix of fear and courage.
The two bullies were momentarily stunned into silence.
"How dare you question me! I'll tear your mouth off so you can't ask any more questions…" Catherine, like a vicious little monster, lunged at Tiana, ready to resort to violence.
But before she could reach her, Julian strode forward and sent her flying with a swift kick.
"Ow! That hurts!" the little girl wailed, collapsing on the floor in a heap of tears.
Julian bent down and scooped Tiana into his arms. "Sweetheart, when did you get back? Why didn't you tell Daddy?"
At the same time, Felicity shrieked and rushed to her daughter's side. "Catherine! Catherine, my baby! What happened to you? Dad! Mom! Come quick!"
Catherine looked at Julian cradling Tiana in disbelief. "Daddy, that's my daddy! I finally have a daddy… Daddy, don't hold that filthy thing, she has lice that will bite you! She stinks! Daddy, hold me! I smell nice, I'm a good girl…"
The second floor of Julian's villa descended into chaos, a messy, ugly scene of flaring tempers and bitter accusations.
"Enough!" Julian's roar silenced everyone.
They all fell quiet, the Nicholsons and the Shepherds glaring at each other with undisguised hostility.
Later, the two families sat in the living room downstairs to hash things out.
"Julian! Catherine calls you 'Daddy' with every other breath. How could you be so cruel as to kick her? She's just a child!" Henrietta demanded.
Felicity issued her own threat. "Julian! Let's get a divorce! I'll go to the clinic right now and have these babies aborted. I can't just stand by and watch you people bully my daughter. We both have daughters. Is your daughter with your ex-wife a child, but mine isn't? Is mine just someone you can kick and abuse as you please?"
