Chapter 522: Distracting Atlas

Lola shook her head, chuckling to herself as she walked back toward the family wing.

Comforting someone was not really her forte. She couldn’t even comfort herself, let alone others. So how could she comfort Izu?

Still, she understood his frustrations after piecing together bits of what Haji said.

Whether one admits it or not, being recognized for their efforts — even when they claim they don’t do it for recognition — was a fuel that kept them going. Even just a little bit of recognition, and not praise.

Lola was like that too, sometimes.

"At times, though... I wish my husband were a little more expressive to others," she murmured, enjoying the cold wind blowing through the open corridor connecting both wings. "At least Izu would know this... there’s a reason my husband chose them to protect his treasures."

That, or Izu needed to understand Atlas more than the structure of the Order.

For the longest time, the Order’s security system was built to protect the king — to protect the main family. So, the Inner Circle used to be where the elite soldiers were stationed.

This, however, changed when Atlas took command.

Unlike previous leaders of the Order, Atlas’s logic was more practical. Instead of placing the strongest soldiers at the last line of defense, he designated those who excelled in combat to the Outer Circle — the first barrier, the first line of defense.

It had its risks, but Atlas believed that by putting the elite at the front, they could lower casualties. Instead of sending cannon fodder out first, better to end the threat the moment it emerged. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Classic Atlas.

That didn’t mean the Inner Circle was weak, though.

Every soldier in the Order was trained extensively — all capable of becoming elite fighters. But since Atlas had another group directly under him — the Phantom Circle — who acted as his shadow guards, he placed those who excelled not only in combat but also in strategy and quick decision-making on the front lines.

The ranking system simply existed to acknowledge those who showed results — it wasn’t about who was weakest or strongest. And since Izu’s team and the Outer Circles were assigned to their specific role, they didn’t receive many missions. As a result, their scores and points remained low, which placed them at the bottom of this stupid ranking system.

This was exactly why none of the people closest to Atlas cared about ranks at all.

"Unfortunately, no one would ever know that," she whispered, folding her hands behind her back. "Because my husband will never disclose such a tactic."

A shallow breath escaped her as she shook her head.

Atlas never told her this outright, but she understood him better now. She no longer needed every detail to see the bigger picture.

Lola didn’t dwell on it too long, knowing she had done her part. She wasn’t the best at comforting, but she knew Izu would show up tomorrow, even if the world ended.

Satisfied, Lola skipped lightly back toward the family wing. Her steps halted the moment she entered their little home, because there sat her husband on the couch, expression as lifeless as a ten-year-old corpse.

And in front of him... were the twins, dancing.

Their tiny hips swayed side to side; little arms waved as they danced to "Pearly Shells."

"Tell me what’s going on?" Lola blurted out, watching her children whip their heads toward her.

Chacha and Second beamed until their eyes narrowed into crescents.

"Mommy said to distract Daddy~!"

"We’re distracting Daddy~!" Second added, both continuing their wiggly sea-wave dance while staring straight at Lola.

...This was not the distraction she meant.
