Emily stayed in the hospital all afternoon. She read every scan and note in Edward's chart, and the conclusion matched Jonathan's—only a heart transplant could extend his life.
Emily leaned back and rubbed her brow.
She couldn't help but think of Edward's warm smile.
Over the past few years, he had been the only one who'd treated her like family. She couldn't just stand by and watch him die.
She grabbed the phone and dialed the director's office. "Dr. Strebelle, please convene an emergency meeting with all doctors at or above department head level from both cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery."
…
Half an hour later, the tenth floor conference room was full. All the hospital's heavy hitters were there, including Adrain.
Emily presented Edward's condition on the screen, and with each new slide, expressions turned grim. Everyone knew how dire it was.
"Right now, medication is only a stopgap," she said. "If we want to extend his life, the only viable option is a heart transplant."
"I object!" came a sharp voice. It was from the deputy head of cardiology, Kendrick Summers. He'd even shot to his feet as he spoke.
"You make it sound simple! This is among the hardest operations we do, and we don't have a successful internal precedent! If the first one fails, who carries that responsibility? It won't just be the operating surgeon's name on the line. It will be the hospital's!"
He swept his gaze around the room. "And we're talking about Edward Holton. He's a major shareholder. If anything goes wrong, who's going to take responsibility?"
The room wavered with him. Indeed, the risk was massive, and the fallout could be worse.
Meanwhile, Adrain sat at the head of the table, frowning and not yet willing to give the order.
Emily calmly looked at Kendrick.
Of course she knew the risks. But a doctor shouldn't back down just because the risk was high.
Kendrick scoffed at her silence. "If you want to play the savior, fine. But don't drag us into it just so you can walk away with the praise while we hold the liability."
That was too harsh.
