With the team finally in place, a weight lifted off Emily's chest.
With that settled, she slipped away to check on Edward.
Gabriel had sat with Edward all night and had left only a short while ago.
Edward was pale as chalk but more alert than Emily had expected. He propped himself up against the pillows when she walked in. "Mills," he called, waving her over.
Emily walked over to the bed and tucked the blanket back over his shoulders. "I came to see how you're doing."
Edward clasped her hand with his wrinkled fingers as guilt weighed down his gaze. "We owe you more than I can say." He'd lived long enough to see things clearly. Of everyone, the Holton family owed Emily the most.
The words touched a soft spot, and Emily's heart ached. She forced a smile and bent down until they were eye to eye. "Don't say that. All you need to do now is rest. Once we make it through the surgery, I'll still be your granddaughter."
Edward's eyes filled with tears as he nodded. "Alright... Alright..."
Upon seeing the relief on his face, Emily felt a bit more at ease. Slowly, she straightened up and ran through her checks.
Edward's pupillary response, heart rate, and blood pressure were all stable. But just as Emily pulled back her stethoscope back, the heart monitor by the bed suddenly let out a sharp, piercing alarm.
On the screen, the rhythm strip went dead straight.
Emily's eyes widened in shock. "Mr. Holton Senior!"
In the next instant, the door slammed open, and the medical team rushed in.
"Dr. Sterling! He's in V-fib!"
"Hurry! Get the defibrillator ready! One amp of epinephrine, IV push!" Emily quickly ordered.
The team handled the rescue in order.
